Cool

If you haven't noticed, Handspring's stock has jumped about $20 in the last 8 days or so. Any theories on why it has suddenly jumped so drastically? News leaks about new models and the cell phone module perhaps?

Too bad I didn't grab HAND at its IPO price, but at least I bought before this big jump. Any predictions on the near and long term course of HAND?

I was choking myself earlier because I thought the stock wouldn't past the 48 high. I was wrong. Handspring stock was trading almost flat at 30s 2 weeks ago.

Why it surged? Could be the news with new Visors coming out. Analyst said it would probably end up in the 70s range by the end of the year.

Has anyone notice Handspring stock doesn't move with Nasdaq?

My only question is why did it go up before the leak about new products. It seems that some people know more than us on this subject.

The real leak wasn't yesterday's news items, it was back on 9-8-00 when posted on VisorCentral , see:

http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...p?threadid=7978

where we were told of the color visor. Then this thread on 9-13-00 asking why the stock price was up.

Charo, That link that you gave gives a user saying that he heard a rumor from some unreliable source. The first reliable (maybe not reliable, but crediental (sp?)) was on Sept 19 when ZDNET (maybe CNET) had the story. Up to that point there have been many "rumors" saying that "my friend heard from his boss that his friend...", all of them posted on Visor central.

On the stock price raise on the 13th. That's exactly my question.

But that's my point and it was a reliable source . And the stock price was already moving then. There are always those in the know ahead of time that are ahead of the general stock price move. Normally by the time the general public knows as a result of news items like those put out yesterday the market has already acted.

I bought Omnisky today. I'm gonna get AvantGo depending on how well Omnisky is doing. GoAmerica (GOAM) went IPO last April and is swimming at bottom of the ocean and they do similar business with Omnisky.

Still waiting for Handspring to plunge so I can grab some more! (I sold mine before it hit the roof.. sorry to those who want it to go up)

Arrow

How about today's surge--from 67 to (currently) 76! I'm not complaining, mind you, but it would be nice to get some kind of handle on what sparks these big jumps.

This is the stock market! Half the time, it's just based on how the rest of the market is doing. Someone may have put out a buy recomendation, or it may be all the new springboards that are being mentioned in the PCIA

If we knew what caused it, everyone would make money on the market! (Now if it can just go up to $125.50 a share, I can make $10,000 before taxes on it, and after commision!

Yeah. I am just used to stocks that are not nearly as volatile.

Like Echinye I got out before I got too greedy...can't complain with a run from mid 20's to mid 60's before I bailed though...will provide more than one each of the new units ~ gratis

In any case, this high is amazing, thought for sure there would be a pullback Tuesday, but just keeps on climbing. Sure wish it'd dip so I could climb back on the train...
Following RIMM too...still think long run, all these are going to soar as PDA's really catch on. Best of all HAND has been above PALM all week long

if only we knew..

It has been an interesting week for me so far.. I was riding the curve on Omnisky hoping to make up the profit I missed from Handspring. Tho, I should have jump in on the dip on Palm yesterday. It's one or the other.

i'm not a stock expert and don't pretend to play one on the internet but this is the best explaination i could find while searching around:

It all falls to supply and demand (obvious eh?). handspring has a specific number of shares 'available', palm has MUCH more shares 'available'. So when demand increases, the HAND stock will go up faster as there are less shares to go around. What's the increase of demand from? We're at the end of the 3rd quarter and many fund managers are setting up their portfolios for the 4th quarter. The better the fund looks, the more people buy into it right? Many of them are loading up on what's hot in the market right now (i.e. HAND, PALM, etc.) so that when they present their fund in 4th Q they can say 'ooo look at my fund, it has HAND, etc. and we've got the hot stocks!'

Going back to supply and demand....Result? HAND up 9 bucks and PALM up 3 1/2. But look at the volume of shares traded...2.2 million HAND, and 10.2 million PALM.

Compare the number of shares traded to the number of shares available and you'll see why the drastic increase.

Like i said, i'm not an expert but that's the way it was explained to me.

Thumbs up

Thanks, Hoser. That definitely makes some sense. I hadn't thought about the end of the quarter having something to do with it.
