I'm looking for suggestions for an ISP to use with my Visor/Thincom when on the road. In the past I used to use Compuserve, because they have so many local access numbers and an 800 service for when they don't. BUT, Compuserve doesn't seem to work very well with Palms/Visors. There are lots of gripes on the Compuserve forums from people who haven't been able to successfully log on. (I think the problem is primarily with the DNS service). I've almost never been able to successfully log onto the CIS network. SO, I'm looking to replace Compuserve with another nationwide Palm-OS-friendly ISP. Any suggestions? (AT&T is on the top of my list, at the moment).

ISPs for PDAs

Thanks, Charo. I didn't search far enough back.

The thread to which you pointed me, though, is about free ISPs. I don't mind subscribing to a service, especially if it has international access numbers (as AT&T does).

I'll check out the free services, meanwhile.

Frank,

I am also a CompuServe Classic Member who is having problems connecting to it with my Visor/Hanspring Modem.

I use MSn to connect. So far, I have only traveled in my home state, but there was always a number to call.

I've used both my Visor and the Handspring modem (as well as a Palm III and the Palm Modem) with Netcom/Mindspring/Earthlink with no problems.

I actually started out with a Netcom account and kept it through the Mindspring and Earthlink aquisitions. Although Earthlink doesn't outright tell you can't do it, you can use the Mindspring and Netcom POP numbers as well as the Earthlink access numbers. Just use the right DNS servers.

And I've done so, logged in, AvantGo the net, and sent/received mail on my Palm devices. This give me more dialup numbers in most cities-- I've gone into towns where there were 3, sometimes 4 different dialup numbers (there may be 1 Netcom, 1 Mindspring and 2 Earthlink numbers). A little known secret

Another nationwide ISP to consider is IBM's IGN. Wait-- didn't IBM sell off their ISP service to AT&T? If so and if they've done what Mindspring and Earthlink has done-- don't change the front-end infrastructure, the connectivity to a PalmOS device should be good. I say "PalmOS" device because I've only used the service with my Palm III and Palm Modem.

I don't use my Visor to access the net as I have to use my laptop for presentations, but I have a good national ISP with PSN. They have national and international access numbers. You can check them out at http://www.psn.net

I got a great deal from them on DSL, but the mindblower is that instead of installing ADSL, they put in SDSL for the same price per month I was paying for ISDN access ($39.85/mth).

Thumbs up

A few months ago I switched to Earthlink and have been very happy with the service and services I've gotten. I've been able to easily access Earthlink's network from everywhere I've gone and it's always been reliable. I'm waiting to find out that they're run by some awful group that I don't want to associate with, but until then I'm quite pleased.
