Question

Hi guys and gals. I'll be getting my Edge in the mail tomorrow from HS and I'm a little concerned that it my be one of the flakey ones. I wanted to conduct a poll as to who has had a flakey one and who's has been working without incident.

Angry Problem

My digitizer went out and I am still awaiting my replacement! I was told this week sometime. I need an e-mail to someone at HS to let them know my displeasure. There are no customer service emails on their site. Hope I get it soon.

my skinny lil super model went all stroppy when I shoved something dodgy her way, she seems better now. I know the cause! IRLink does not work on this OS and T9 keyboard does not seem to as well.

Angry

Further to the troubles I posted elsewhere (digitizer lock-up) I've had a series of very unsatisfactory conversations with Handspring technical support and customer services (in Europe). Basically my Edge is currently working but only because the battery ran down and allowed the machine to reset itself. Tech support will not replace the unit as it currently works even though it did lock up and a hard reset would not solve the problem.

As they will not replace the unit and I have no faith in the problem not re-occuring they leave me with no choice but to ask for a refund and return the unit.

Even then they tell me it will take three weeks to refund my money, saying my card company will hold the money for a few weeks to make interest. I've never heard such nonsense. HS also knock off the cost of postage for sending me the faulty Edge and I have to pick up the cost of returning the unit which is faulty.

This is my first experience of dealing with Handspring. It will also be my last. I recommend that nobody purchase a machine from them in Europe (I understand the American return policy is different and far more generous in terms of time).

Question On the edge

My first pda was my new visor edge. It seems like an awesome little device (though NTs lack of USB? makes me a little ornary). Anyway 3 days after I got it the sreen went flaky and registered all input in the upper left corner.

Did the usual... soft, warm, hard reset. After the hard reset I was stuck in the digitizer. Like others mine quickly ran out of batteries. After recharging it, it was happy again, for 18 hours. Then bam!!! It flaked out again.

When it went bad the first time I talked to palm (on Saturday). They said I'd have a new one on Wednesday and all shipping would be free. If the new one behaves strangely at all, I'm intending to get a refund (I hope that doesn't happen).

When I first got it, the stylus fit snugly in its slot. Now it wiggles all over the place. The wiggling doens't bother me but its quick deterioration concerns me. Seems to me like HS needs to do a bit more QA on this product. I'm not too happy.... and the messages on this board don't cheer me up at all

Take Care!

Thumbs up So far so good

This is the third day using my Edge and not a crash. I even flew with it yesterday using the Magellan GPS. Hope it stays that way.

You know, I had a perfectly functional edge...Screen was good, backlight was bright...no hard resets or freezes, digitizer was great, etc, etc. The stylus did rattle, but that was no surprise. The cover was a plus as far as I was concerned. The form factor was perfect...thin, felt solid.

However, you'll notice I'm speaking in the past tense...I took it back and got the prism I had originally. Why? Because I like springboards. I have three. One of them is a Soundsgood. I hated that detachable springboard slot. It wouldn't have been so bad, except that you leave the screen coverless with the springboard attached. It felt nice to hold, but was unstable on a desktop. Furthermore, it was no thinner than a Prism with a module attached. Why bother? For nearly the same price, I get color, and a unit with a permanent springboard slot. It really is a pain to have to carry the slot around, and detach the cover every time you want to use it. My stowaway wouldn't work, and I just didn't feel like selling it.

All-in-all, it was a nice unit, and I had no problems. Given, it was a little on the expensive side, but nice nonetheless. The quick look-up feature was great--someone should write a hack that does the same thing.

In summary:
- Loved the cover
- Loved the form factor

- Hated the detachable slot
- Stylus rattled plenty
- Not the beautiful bright color Prism screen
- My stowaway works again!! (-swoon-)

I've fallen in love with the Prism all over again.

Cheers,
-Stimp

It is not a hack, and does not do exactly the same thing, but I bought phone mate at handango for $10 and it is very easy to look up numbers one-handed. You press the address button once for phone mate and twice for the regular address app. The screen shows a keypad with nine keys with three letters each. Each button has three letters, like a phone keypad. You can spell out first name, last name, or company name and it tries to guess what entry you are after. The top one third of the screen shows the narrowed-down list. The buttons are big enough to not need the stylus, like the calculator, and is a sinch one-handed. Once you have put in a couple letters, the list is usually down to one name. If there is still more than one entry, you can use the scroll buttons to highlight the correct one and press the todo button to show details of the contact. It has nice icons for the data in the address fields and the color screen shots on their web page look really great (it looks pretty good on my vdx too). It is a lot easier to use than I have made it sound, check it out.

Red face Fatal Exception Edge

My Edge got the "Fatal Exception" error after 6 days of ownership. It was just after the first time I'd Hot Synched and a Hard Reset was pretty useless.

I let the batteries run down, recharged in the cradle and got about 4 hours of use out of it after another Hot Synch before the "Fatal Exception" returned.

I exchanged it at the CompUSA where I purchased it this afternoon, and they indicated that it was the second Edge they'd seen returned for this problem.

Working on No. 2... wish me luck!

UPDATE 4/20/01

After three days, the new Edge is still going strong. I have Hot Synched numerous times, added files, deleted files...tried everything I could think of to bring the Edge down, but not so far. The last one lasted 6 days. We shall see if this new unit can break the old record....

UPDATE 5/2/01

I've now had my replacement Visor Edge for two weeks and no problems; rock solid. I've toted it everywhere (including on vacation to help me through the NYC subway system...) and no sign of any problems. Of course, they usually happen without any prior warning, but color me optimistic at this point! Good luck to all you Edge owners out there!

Red face Crashed Visor Edge

JAK I've got just the same error.

Handspring customer support will now replace my defective Visor.

I hope that they find the solution to this problem very soon because I've a bad feeling this error may occur again when I got my replacement Visor.

We'll see...

My edge went crazy also

Woo Hoo my first post and it had to be this. I've had my Edge for almost 10 days now, absolutely no problems. I had it in my shirt pocket and have been at my desk all day, not even a lunch break. I took it out to enter some info regarding a customer and BAM digitizer is gone. I bit the bullet and did a hard reset, still no go. Guess I'll have to see how good Handspring Customer Support is. First I'm going to let the battery run all the way down and do another hard reset, wish me luck.

This procedure fixed my Edge backlight that was not functioning. Hotsync to backup data. Intentionally drained battery. Hard reset. Charged batteries for approx 4 hours.

Bad Backlight

Purchased a Edge due to failure of Palm Vx while waiting on M505 and it had a bad backlight or should I say no backlight. Returned to CompUSA and the replacement was bad as well. Unit was returned for credit will use laptop with pen and paper and hope my M505 arrives sooner than later.

Angry Faulty Digitizers

I have gone through *THREE* HS Edges in the last month. All with the digitizer problem. American return policies have been nice, but I'm on my fourth. You can read *EVERYTHING* between me and handspring at this website.

This was my first PDA purchase ever. I've been through 2 visor edges, and i'm on my 3rd. All systems are green so far. The first and second units had defective backlights. Other than that, I love the edge. Customer service has been annoying but effective. They put me though a soft, then hard reset the first time around, and then shipped me a new unit.

The saga continues..........

My Edge is back up and running without a hitch. I did a hard reset after letting my battery run all the way down. It was kind of funny because I had been reading all of the posts by other Edge users and thought it wouldn't happen to me. So I can feel your frustration because I did not want to have to return my red edge and have to wait for another one. I'm going to give it 2 more weeks if there are no more problems I will send it in for the 16 meg upgrade.

To GV in Pacifica:

Oh! There's a capacity upgrade available? Cool. I'll check out the handspring website.
