NO new Visor announcement

I don't think that there will be any new product announcements from Handspring for the rest of this year. I hope I that I am wrong though.

Because of HandSprings very limited cash reserves, most analysts believe that they can currently only afford one major product release. This is because of the costs of production tooling, manufacturing enough units to fill the channel and advertisingwould eat a signifigant percentage of the reserves. The Treo is obviously where they are spending their money.

If they introduce a new color unit in the near future, it will get pushed out the door in the same way that the new mono units were released recently - no advertising, limited PR, etc. This is fine for derivative devices, but for a device that actually has new features, you need to get the word out to be successful.

This theory (could be wrong), says that HS is going to throw everything that they have behind the Treo and so will hold off on any other major product announcements until after the the Treo has generated enough revenue to support them. If this is the case, then things are pretty grim at HS if the Treo isn't a run-away hit.

I can tell you for SURE, that the "new color visor" will NOT be called the Prism 2. What kind of name is that? Maybe Prism Slim. Nah, that sounds bad too.

Anyway, they already have a respectable color unit out, and with the treo, I can't see them releasing such a similar product right now.

Cool New Color displays on the horizon (or "I Told ya'll so.."

PDA Buzz picked up info on this overlooked entry at ComDex.. Granted, the VC correspondents were focusing on the HS hype, but ya'd think they coulda kept an eye out for other PDA-related tech...
..LG Electronics displayed an Organic Electro-luminescent (OEL) display for PDA's.. Apparently the tech has matured enough for commercial release. The upshot: LCD's death knell. OEL & OLED (organic LED, a similar tech) offer significant improvements in resolution, color depth, energy savings, display response while allowing thinner, lighter displays that are easier to manufacture and therefore cheaper
Anyways, I've been watching OLED/ OEL display tech for a while now, and is just so totally promising.. Coupled with the comment that the Treo270 will have an "undisclosed" color display type, it's just sooooo tantilizing.
So, if this new tech is on the market, and the Treo 270 is in the wings.. Sounds like HS is again holding their cards until they can offer a well-done product. When the IIIc came out, they didn't just rush to market with a clone, they waited till they could blow the IIIc off the shelves.. I think sometime early to mid next year, once the new displays are fully comercially available, we'll be seeing a new Color HS model. (and given the lightness/thinness of the new displays, the possibility of a color Edge should be better..)
