The shortcut .6 on my problem VE also comes up with 3/2/01,2:19pm. I still have my problem VE I have called twice to get how to send it back and both times I have been told the instructions are in the mail have yet to receive them. The new VE has been working fine for over 2 weeks. The new VE also comes up with 3/2/01 2:19pm so I don't think that has any correlation. Hope HS finds what is wrong. Both old and new assembled in Mexico.

Talking No problems from newbie

Visor Edge is my first PDA and I'm happy with it. After reading this board, I was expecting a lot of problems. So far after a lot of programs downloaded, and a lot of use (from a geek, that means playing around with EVERYTHING trying to learn more about it), I had no problems with it whatsover. My little brother has now been playing Pokemon on it for 2 hours now and it seems to be doing ok. (One heck of an expensive gameboy if you ask me!).

Now if only there was an Edge specific module to connect to my Sony gsm handphone. I can't imagine getting a non-edge specific Visor Phone. A normal module would make my Edge all chunky with an unprotected screen

Good luck. I think in most cases digitizer problems only sufaced after a week or so of use (that's my own personal experience, anyway but I use my visor a lot). Let us know how she goes.

Well I am returning my Red Edge today. I'm so upset, after I got it up and running again I was using it like usual and the digitizer problem happened again! I didn't have any hacks running, I hadn't installed hackmaster on this one, I hadn't backed up for 2 days and lost all of that work. Now I know some will say that you should back up every day and normally I do but this is a brand new unit there shouldn't be any problems with it. So I will wait until the middle of summer and order another one, hopefully the problems will have been resolved by then. Back to my Green VDX rock solid since 11/99 . One other thing Handspring Support is the BEST no problems with my return at all.

Still no problems so far. Could it be because I have a different batch?

Mine is the first Malaysian batch (assembled in Malaysia not Mexico).

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by digitizer problems? Is this related to problems with using the stylus/graffiti?

I'll wait until the end of next week to post more results. But so far.. no problems with the Visor itself. I had some instability problems with DateBK 4d, but after a lot more entries these seem to have disappeared. Wierd one. Have downloaded and tried a lot of programs (2mb left now).

One thing I've learned is that games run down the battery really fast, like from full to almost nothing in 4-5 hours or so.

Actually, I would (and have) backup more with a new unit esp. the first batch of said units than with a device that's proven itself for a year and a half. Not trying to kick you when your down, just pointing out that new-ness is no substitute for proven reliability. Same can be said for relationships, come to think of it.

That's what we're trying to figure out.

So was my first one which went bad.

All stylus activity is registered in the upper left corner of the screen.

Mostly running Pokemon (Liberty) that my little bro plays on for hours at a time, when I get home. Runs down the battery real fast.

It seems that my Visor is actually getting more stable through use (not the other way around). 4 days now without requiring a soft reset. And I think I've got all the programs I need for it.

And no digitizer problems at all.

Also I often have it in my back pocket, and conditions here are like 32C with 98% humidity everyday. And I run and jump with it when I'm running late and trying to catch buses and trains on the daily commute to work. Using it on a bus with very rough ride, so that should be digitizer problems if it wasn't made well becasue when there is a big bump, I must be pressing/hitting the screen quite hard and so far no problems with it.

I'm hoping I'm just lucky, it seems to be a 50/50 chance of people having no problems or it just doesn't work.

Red face HOLY CR@P!

I was about to reccomend the EDGE to a friend who is looking for a higher mid-priced PDA. Nope, get the M500 / M505 for now and wait till Handspring gets their act together.

No wonder they're not making a color screen for the EDGE, they're having too much trouble with the grayscale screen!

Thumbs down

Well, I never thought I had to post in this Board...

I used my Edge for a month and after reading this board prior to buying my VE I had some thoughts of maybe not buying it at all and settling for a palm instead.

Everything went all right for a month but after my last Hotsync (used Backup Buddy, phew...) the omnious Fatal Exception occurred to me.
I tried Soft, firm then Hard reset(pressing ON-Button), with no success. Unless I plug the VE into the cradle immediately after resetting I get the FatalEyception-Message after 2-3 Sec.
Furthermore I suffer from this Digitizer flaw, some were talking about.
Unbfortunally today is a Holiday in Germany and I cant get any Handspring Support by Phone, well, I guess I have to wait till tomorrow for a good yell at the Service.
(I know the service is not to blame for bad products, I promise not to shout too much... )

By the way, mine was assembled in Mexico too.

quote:

Add-on:

Draining the Batteries seems to help - My VE was reanimated after draining and recharging the Battery. I live in constant fear of the next Breakdown however.

I called Handspring Germany today and they told me something about third party Software and the thing..
I told the person on the line about seven times thad I had done several Hard Resets and that after a hard reset there is no 3rd P Software supposed to remain on a Palm Device and still the problem persisted.
She insisted that I do a Hard Reset with her on the Phone, which I didnt want since my VE was functional after draining and recharging and by the time I had all my software and stuff reinstalled.

There seems to be a difference however, between resetting (even a Hard Reset) and letting the Batteries drain. Support seems to know nothing about the fault that causes the error in the first place, they kept telling me about the RAM Problem of the Visor Deluxe or something.
I hope for you folks that the US-Support is better....

Talking

That is incorrect. A hard reset does not remove everything.
More than meets the eye.

#2's on its way back to Handspring. Hit the power button: nothing. I've tried all sorts of resets to no avail. I even took the back off the thing and made sure that all connections were good (those I could find, anyway ? e.g. battery, screen, etc.). I'm happy to report that, contradictory to bblue's rumor, the case is entirely anodized aluminum. The plastic only constitutes the rim (and if you're going to take the back off, you can, more than likely, leave the screws in the plastic alone). I've commandeered my wife's prism for the duration.

One thing I've noticed with my Edge is that the screen seems to be on the fragile side. Within a couple of days of use, I noticed the Graffiti area was scratched up quite a bit. I know it wasn't the stylus (PDAPanache Duo) I was using, because it's the same one I've used on my Newton over the last 3-4 years. And the Newton doesn't have a scratch on it. So I've used the Scotch tape trick, but it still bothers me. Not to mention the full length scratch from using 'top to bottom' pen shortcut.

Another thing that bothers me is that the Datebook hard button sometime takes 2-3 presses to work. It doesn't do it all the time, so it might be me.

Just thought I'd throw out some things I've noticed, and ask, should I complain to Handspring about this?

----
UPDATE:
I just called Handspring and they're sending me out a new Edge.

Yeah. It's the only way they're going to know if it's an issue with enough devices that they need to adjust manufacturing, and you shouldn't have to put up with it, regardless.
