Blazer & Thinmodem

Anyone have Blazer installed on the original Thinmodem's flash? I've had such a time with AvantGo that I deleted it and am trying another route. I can get email fine, but sometime during the couse of my browsing, I get a fatal error, requiring a hard reset (or 10) to get it back working. I once had to delete my saved prefs file to get the thing back in order, just wanted to see if this combo works with anyone else before trying it. Thanks,
Sterling

What version of Blazer are you using? I seem to be having similar problems with 2.0... lot's of lockups and crashes. I've had to do 2 hard resets in the past 24 hrs... not sure they were a direct result of Blazer, but I had been using it prior to both occurences.

I'm also having significant trouble with Eudora mail as well... I'm starting to suspect garbage in Saved Preferences but am not exactly sure what to do (or how to go about doing it).

Ain't technology wonderful?

Mark,
I wasn't using Blazer, I was using AvantGo, I was going to try Blazer due to all the good reviews I've seen of it. Every time my machine locked up, it affected network preferences. What tipped me off was after a warm reset, I could not move the beam receive from off to on. Doing a hard reset ot two corrected this, but after restoring from a backup, I would get a network library not available error. I then deleted the network DB file from the backup directory of PiBackup and tried again, same problem. When I got back home (that was the worst part - being two states away and my piece was broken!), I made a backup of the networkDB file on a floppy and performed a hotsync, then replaced the networkDB file, still no good. I don't know what prompted me to delete the saved preferences file, but I did and it went back to working (as evidenced by the beam receive functioning properly again) I had to reenter all my software regs again, but this seemed to fix it, but what a hassle! I also thought it may have had something to do with PiBackup, I 've seen posts hinting that it isn't all that reliable, so I got a HS Backup module today at the Office Depot sale-A-thon, maybe that'll help.
I don't know what else is in saved prefs, but if you have all your software regs handy, I'd kill that file and start all over, as the regs and system prefs were the only things I saw that it affected. Good luck. Lemme know how you make out.

Interesting... I also lost my network library... even a BackupBuddy restore didn't fix it. Luckily, I had a fresh backup on the module and it worked.

Since I wasn't using AvantGo, I wonder what could have caused these symptoms? Sounds like we had identical problems caused by different software. Puzzling...

Oh well... time to search for a Saved Prefs editor... (I'm not prepared to find all my reg codes!)

Don't even know where to start looking for a saved pref's editor, as far as the regs, I made a HanDBase thingy for that, just cut and paste!
Let me know where you havn't looked, maybe we can solve this together, every other computer I have is acting up, might as well fix the Visor first

Actually - come to think of it, I think I was comparing file sizes of different apps - that's what led me to look at saved prefs, it was 3AM last night, though - who knows...

This may be Thinmodem related. I have lost netlib several times
since using the Thinmodem and never lost it while using the
Minstrel S modem. Kind of a pain.

Kind of a pain???

Were you using the updated software? Mark - are you using the Thinmodem? Rick - How did you recover, a simple restore and away you went?

similar problems with Xircom modem

Hi there:

Testing my recently bought Xircom GlobalAccess Modem I had several errors like the ones you have: several soft resets and three hard resets. I got a fatal error with Blazer and also with Multimail Pro III. I replaced them with Eudora Internet Suite, and it gave me also a fatal exception...
Then, I updated the software module, and appeared the cause: low batery warning in the modem. With the first version of the software this message was not available...

I wasn't using a Thinmodem or GlobalAccess, I'm connecting via cell phone. What model Visors are we using here? I'm on a VDx. I ask only to see what the common thread could be.

I'm using a Prism and Thinmodem (not plus) with the 2.1 update.
When recovering, sometimes a soft reset would work, other times
a warm followed by a soft, other times I had to backup, hard reset
and then copy the default files to my memplug, then restore and
copy the files back to ram. It really is annoying. Sounds like it is
not a module issue since it is happening with other modems and
cell phone connections. Could be the Handspring OS.

Well, it appears I've solved my problem with Eudora. I tried using Eudora Web and got the same error I was getting with mail. Hmmm... then I remembered that the two apps are tied together; Mail lets you tap on links and open the browser and Web lets you tap email links to send messages.

Anyway, I deleted everything... Mail, Web, and desktop conduits. I then re-installed the EIS 2.1 package and now everything works (at least for the time being).

I'm going to try some more surfing and email, but that'll have to wait until after the turkey is gone.

I'm using a Prism with the updated Thinmodem (Original), AvantGo, AOL IM and One-Touch mail. Sounds like there is no common thread, different modems, different software, different OS versions....mmmmm.

There is a thread here where someone recommended not using AOL IM, I deleted it, but still got the fatal error after it, so I don't know for certain if that was the cause or not.

I don't think I've had a problem using AOL IM. My memory is
getting bad in my old age, but I can't remember any problems.

I've had some problems along the same lines as you guys have been talking about. One thing that seems to clear things up is deleting the 'unsaved prefs'. I use a little utility called Database Utility I think I got it off Freeware Palm.

From the PalmOS Developers Knowledgebase:
The "saved" preferences database contains preferences that are backed up during a HotSync operation. There is one "saved" preferences database that all applications use. This database contains all system-wide preferences as well as application-specific preferences.

The "unsaved" preferences database contains application-specific preferences that are not to be backed up during a HotSync operation. There is one "unsaved" preferences database that all application use.

It's most likely a combination of the two... since the unsaved preferences are not backed up, they don't get restored after a hard reset. In my case, I still had problems after a hard reset so I think the trouble lies more in the saved preferences.

One thing to note: I've done a considerable amount of online activities since my last hard reset a couple of days ago. However, when I restored, I did not reinstall AIM and haven't had any problems. I'm not saying AIM was the culprit, and I'm not brave enough to reinstall it to find out at this point. When I suffered the error that caused the hard reset, I was using AIM with open chat sessions and went into other apps while they were still active. Maybe the rudimentary multitasking exploited by AIM is at fault?!?

Or lack thereof!
