email problems

Ok, here are the specs, I am using a Visor Prism, Eudora 2.1, an Ericsson T28w with the DI28 IR modem, and Voicestream is my carrier.
Here is the problem, I can normally connect to my ISP with no problem, I connect to the mail server just fine as well, I do get occasional timeouts when actually downloading the messages, but I figure this is just part of using GSM to get my email. However I have a problem with fatal errors from time to time. Everything seems to be going fine then I will notice that my phone has disconnected, the fatal error screen pops up with the on screen "reset" button which doesn't work, I perform a soft reset and this freezes my Visor so then I have to perform a hard reset and restore from my back up module. I also will occasionally get an error screen that says "TOP not supported". This doesn't require a reset but I have no idea what it means, any one have any ideas on how to stop this problem?

Instead of doing a hard reset, do a warm reset. This is done by
holding down the up button while inserting the pin to reset.
When the Palm OS screen appears, hold the up button a few
seconds, then release. You should be back to normal. Also, try
deleting and reinstalling the e-mail program only. Don't delete
the databases, only the .prc file. That should clear up the problems.

After a warm reset, you still need to do a soft reset in order to re-enable any hacks or OS extensions. A warm reset bypasses these... you can think of it like Windows "Safe Mode".

Nah. You can go to your Hack manager and re-enable 'em from there after a warm reset.

I appreciate all the help with my email problem, but I have tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it, and that had no effect. Also when I get a fatal error it won't let me do a warm reset. When I try this I just get a flashing screen and can't seem to get rid of it without doing a hard reset
Any ideas?

I've started having a similar problem. I can send and receive without any trouble... I just can't read an emails. When I tap on a message to open, I get the following Fatal Error (with the unresponsive [Reset] button:

DataMgr.c, Line:5304,
DmWriteCheck Failed

Most of the time, a normal reset (using the reset button on the rear of the Visor) will bring it back. I have, however, had 2 or 3 occasions where a warm reset was needed (and worked), along with 2 necessary hard resets... and this is all since 6 pm last night!

I haven't got any clue as to what is wrong or how to go about fixing it...

TOP is a POP3 command, used to retrieve a certain number of lines from a message. It's not supported by all servers, but would typically be used to get just a portion of a message or, where the server doesn't support the UIDL command (which generates a unique ID for each message) to grab the headers so that the Message-ID can be examined, allowing the mail program to see whether or not it's retrieved a particular message.

So it's not a terribly important error, but it does suggest that the POP server you're connecting to isn't one of the most full featured around.

You might be able to avoid it by changing the options governing which messages are downloaded, so that all messages are transferred to the PDA and deleted from the server, for example.

As for your timeouts, it's not specifically a GSM thing. Do you have a large mailbox? I find that using a web based system to access a very large POP3 mailbox on a system that doesn't support UIDL often times out too, since the mailbox is the other end of a slow link, and by the time the server has scanned through a few megabytes of mail to see what's actually there, the POP client has given up waiting.

Nigel.

With the exception of the "top not supported" problem, I get the same fatal exception errors you are receiving from time to time. I am also using everything you are using (voicestream, eudora 2.1, Prism). I am using the visorphone instead of the phone you mentioned. A hard reset is the only thing that fixes my problem. I am using Earthlink as my ISP. I'm kinda glad to know I'm not the only one having this problem, but wish someone could figure it out so we can get it corrected. Has to be a bug in one of the programs. Anyone?

Charles
