Another HotSync Horror Story

Thursday night my visor PLT suddenly stopped syncing - after months of it being fine - and a year with my dlx.

I have a visor platinum (graphite ), win 98, USB cradle, desktop 3.1

So I did the usual:
-soft reset
-disable all hacks
-warm reset
-Visor USB reg utility

No Sync...
-Hard reset (thank you backup module)
-re-install palm desktop
-go through control panel to reinstall handspring device (it wont)

No Sync...

-test USB port, camera works in it
-uninstall desktop, reinstall,
-edit registry
-restore registry
-edit somemore
-restore
- reinstall windows (over itself)
-reinstall desktop.. a few more times, just in case

No Sync... Have I missed anthing?
So I went out and bought a serial cradle and a USB cable to use with my GoType.. Serial cradle syncs fine.... nothing with USB.
Also - I cant get "Handspring Device" to appear in the Device Manager in the Control Panel... This seems to be a problem...

Maybe this is related - When it stopped syncing I checked the control panel - it was there. I clicked to expand and the next USB Icon did not say Handspring device.. I thought it used to... Could something be corrupted? Anyway, I'm syncing fine with Serial but nothing USB..

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

That same thing happened to me a while back. Drove me bananas. I had just installed HS Desktop 4.01 and the thing just wouldn't sync. I bought a serial cradle (very slow!) and even bought a Palm m105 just in case the Visor was dying. Turned out to be dirty contacts on the USB cradle.

Well, did you hard reset, try to sync, then restore? Or did you reset, restore, sync? The latter won't work if it's a software problem. You'd just be reinstalling the same bug. However, if you did the former it would be OK.

I did hard reset and try to sync before I restored. Nope. I also bought a USB cable to try my GoType as a cradle.. no sync..
As far as dirty contacts - where? I'm assuming it's a software issue since the USB ports work with my camera and a brand new USB cable didnt sync when I use the GoType...

thanks for your input!
any more ideas?

Open the HotSync app on the Platinum and confirm that it is set to Local and that the connection is Direct USB/Serial.

Hmm..look at the contacts on the bottom of the Platinum, and try rubbing them with a pencil eraser. It works for me.

As long as we're checking things, Local USB is enabled in HotSync on the desktop, right?

I did clean the contacts and Local USB is checked on the desktop.

Serial Syncing is working great. I really think its a software / windows issue but am at a loss.
I can't get "Handspring Device" to appear in the Device Manager of Control Panel (it used to be there). I tried reinstalling the VisurUSB.sys, adding new hardware, but it still doesnt appear in device manager.

Thanks again for your help!

I have a DELL PC with WIN98SE and a Visor Deluxe hooked up to it. In addition, I also have a Sony CLIE, both syncing over USB.

The only time either of my Devices show up in the DeviceManager is during a HotSync. USB ports are silent to the PC unless they are active, meaning the devices do not show up until you turn them on. Even if everything is working properly, HandSpring Handheld will not show up until you turn the PDA on in the cradle and hit the HotSync Button.

Try opening Device Manager and performing a HotSync, does HandSpring Handheld show up?

Also, try adding new hardware. Tab through all the options until you get the list of available Hardware. In the list you should find HandSpring Handheld. Try installing the driver this way. I finally had to do this after adding my CLIE so I could get both to Sync.

You may also want to try the USB Registry Utility which can correct some known USB driver problems.

No. But it used to be there all the time.

I did use the registry tool - it said 'no entries found please re-install the desktop', which I did. no luck.

Thank you everyone for your help! This is quite frustrating.. at least the serial cradle works.
