memplug is cool but my digital camera use CF card instead of Smart Media.
I hope they will make a cf card version.

That Memplug looks really tempting. If I had one of those I might buy a Prism since I could take pictures with my digital camera, then put the smart media card into my Visor and review them.

I have an Olympus digital camera and it uses smartmedia so I am going to get this when it's ready.. and also to be able to store palm data, backups, and apps on the smartmedia card, something my MiniJam is "supposed" to do, but I doubt now it ever will..

Each has its advantages:

Matchbook (Or other FAFileMover readers)

  • Cost, you can make your own rather cheap and software is only $12. The new InnoPocket is like $22 w/ software. MemPlug is around $50
  • AutoMover software is promised for release later on, meaning it will automatically move the program/data to the Visor simulating it existing on the Visor's own RAM.
  • The CompactFlash cards used can go up to 192mb, SmartMedia currently maxes out at 128mb.
  • Its a standard side springboard, the MemPlug sticks out a little in the back - presumably for pulling it out.

MemPlug

  • Has FlashRam built-in so all drivers reside on Springboard, unlike FAFileMover which requires you to keep drivers loaded on Visor's RAM
  • Smart Media is thinner than CompactFlash
  • It looks like MemPlug is going to be avilable in a variety of colors, even Cobalt Blue.
  • Has software to view images off of card as well as automatic backup.

It looked to me like the MemPlug also comes with an 8MB SmartMedia card with some Palm software on it. That could explain part of the cost difference.

Here's where it mentions the card:

The great thing about the memplug for me is I have a spare 32mb smartmedia card just collecting dust (I now use a 64mb card in the camera), 32mb for palm stuff is MORE than enough!

My experience with features billed as "to be added soon" is, unless you see it, don't believe it , (Vapor features). (MiniJam is a good example of this), Now that they are working on the Sony Memory stick springboard and other springboards, my feeling is that the MiniJam is on the (far) back burner now... Where's the skin software that was promised?, blink the minijam's led for Palm alarms? Palm Data on the MMC cards...? see my point, vapor features. Unless it does it "out of the box" so to speak, there is a slight chance it may never.. (the company could fold before releasing the software update, etc..)
