Arrow TombRaider

So what do you guys think of Tombraider? I saw it last night and thought it was awesome. Definitely the best action flick I have even seen with a female in the title role.

With that criteria, I might agree with you, though "Romancing the Stone" was pretty good (albeit not completely action-based like this was).

I dunno. I am a big fan of the games, and I like Angelia Jolie as an actress. She certainly did a better job than I originally anticipated, but it was still missing......something. I don't know if it was the editing or the camera angles or what, but it just seemed a little "off" to me. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but it didn't have that "big movie" feel that I think they were going for.

I thought it was missing good writing, good acting, an interesting plot, decent special effects, and interesting dialogue.

The cinematagraphy seemed to have been put together by someone just learning the tricks of the trade.

It was the worse movie I've ever seen. One of the few movies where everyone in the theater seemed to agree with me as well. ;o)

I think it COULD have been a great movie. But it just wasn't. The only reall connection with the video games was Lara. And even that was a weak tie-in. The plot was horrible. I mean REALLY horrible (worse than the Mummy) and the acting was just awful by everyone....where'd they find those people?

But that's just my opinion.

Looking forward to planet of the apes, though.

TombRaider did have a horrible plot, some bad actors (What idiot cast that guy Alex?), and some pretty bad cinemotgraphy. Overall though, I thought the action and scale of the film redeemed it to be an okay film, a nice popcorn flick that I'd enjoy seeing in the theatre but nothing really with rewatch value. I got my $5 worth from it.

It really kinda started to stink in the ending though, like that lame bit where they're running up that huge pyramid...

I saw it yesterday too (special Preview in Australia).
I liked it, it was mindless entertainment, but good entertainment...

I would describe it as 'Indiana Jones with a D cup'....

I also liked the way she reloaded her guns, this explains why she never seems to run out of ammo in the game...

I think there is a big chance there will be a sequel to this movie...

I saw it when it came out... and I was dissapointed. I was hoping for a 2000 Indiana Jones meets 007, with breasts. Well, I got the breasts part... but that seemed like all. I was disspointed with the effects, the acting and the directing, but mostly with the writing. The hype for it was much bigger than it should have been. Oh well.

I was a little disappointed with the movie's cinematography. There were so many times where I wished they would have zoomed out so we could watch what was happening instead of cutting back and forth every 3 seconds.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't hold a sequence for more than 15 seconds. Tombraider took that tip and divided by 3.

And I still don't know why Lara liked that Adam character after all the stuff he did.

That was definately a weak point. They seem to have this mutual distrust/professional courtesy thing, then she gets all misty-eyed when he gets stabbed? I got the impression, though, that the act of turning the knife had more to do with hurting the other guy than it had to do with saving Mr. West (or was it Cross? Alex Cross? See what an impression he made? He was in, what, 3 scenes? No, that's not it. Alex Cross is that detective in the James Patterson books. Oh well.)

I think James hit it on the head. They need to go back and edit it with some longer scenes and some wide shots. I think I would have also like some slow-motion shots. Some slow shot of Lara's determined face, both pistols out in front, the slide on the pistols moves slowly back, the shell casing ejects and slowly tumbles end over end up to the top of the screen. Maybe they did have some slo-mo shots, I have only seen it once, last Friday. If there were any, I have forgotten them.

Saw It.

I saw it; didn't like it.

It's one of those films that seems to have been churned out of a marketing meeting; it looked nice, it had good action sequences (although it has the basic Hong Kong action film absurdity of using two pistols for area instead of point fire), the acting was perfectly adequate, the overall plot was interesting, and I think there were exactly two clever moments in the entire film, plus a very nicely done bungee-fight scene.

I prefer a little more brain in my brainless entertainment. Disney's "Atlantis" or even "Mummy 2" held together much better.

True, but there wasn't any T&A in the movie. The action was fairly bland. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I DO care about plot and cinematography.

I agree. I like a popcorn film as much as the next person, but Tomb Raider just didn't do it for me. They took it too seriously. That's what made films like X-Men and ID4 winners -- fun storylines with decent acting. That's also why I was sooo disappointed with Dungeons & Dragons. The acting there was atrocious even if the dragons looked cool.

Worse than the game. I saw it and kept waiting for it to get better. Sad to say it didn't.

I bought City of Industry (a crime gone wrong film I had never heard of) at a grocery store for $9.95 the next night, $1.20 more than I paid for TR. THAT was a good film. Harvey Kietel, Timothy Hutton, Famke Jansen (sic)(GoldenEye), Brad Dorif (Blade), and a cameo from Lucy Liu (Charlies' Angels), playing Brad Dorifs' stripper ex-girlfriend (Yardie, you would like that part).

I'm glad I bought that one and only watched TR. Kietel is dynamite, and Famke plays a very nuanced part. Brad Dorif plays (as always) a decent psycho loser.

I kept feeling that I was missing something during TR, like I should have played the game more. I did like the vehicles. Oh well, live and learn.

Toolkit,
I bought a VHS tape. They're really cheap now. When I get my tape back (I loaned it to a friend) I'll give you more details (studio, etc.). What kind of system do they use in Australia, PAL?
