Question

I've had a V-dlx for about a year now. Now my company has decided that all of the employees need to use a PDA to collect data in our jobs (I think we will be using the Pen Dragon database program to collect it). Then, we will all hot sync on one computer at work so that this data will be compiled in one central location. My concern is that over the course of the past YEAR my V-dlx has a lot of personal info that I do not want sync'd at work in any form or fashion. I know that you can go to "custom" in the Hot Sync menu and change the settings to "DO NOTHING". But my concern is this --will ANY other information (including the "do nothings") be backed up onto the computer at work in a "backdoor" type fashion? If this is the case, I will need two Visors...one for personal use and one for work, yuck! Do any of you know the correct answer to this concern of mine? Thanks for your help, Vize

That sounds like a true Dilbert moment! There's got to be a better way to get all your data in one place!

Good luck!

Hmmm... if they're going to foot the bill, suffer a little and go for the second Visor!!! Tell 'em you'll need a Prism, though!

As for your question, I agree with PDAENVY... there has to be a better way than syncing several handhelds to one desktop. If you and your co-workers have your own PC's, it would seem that would be a way to merge the company-specific data from each one to a central database. As far as I know, while you can limit the data that gets synced by setting conduits to "do nothing", etc, it is by no means fool-proof and the data on the desktop is not really secure, either (read more here).

I guess your IT guys really need to find a more viable solution to this dilemma.

Actually, if you have more than a handful of PDAs to maintain, you really don't want to play the desktop sync game. Syncs to a ScoutSync server for PDA management, a Pendragon SyncServer for database updates, etc. become mandatory as the PDA count goes up into the dozens of units. Of course, if you are in that mode, the Visor and VDX are right out, as they only support cradle-to-desktop-to-network connections. Yes. Of course you give each business unit the option of doing all the desktop syncing that they want to do; but most units won't be interested in doing it when they see that there are lower cost alternatives . . .

IF all the other conduits are set to "Do Nothing" (including the "System" conduit) AND the default backup conduit is being used (i.e. not Backup Buddy or similar backup conduit replacement) THEN only the information that the active conduit accesses will be copied. If the system conduit is enabled or an alternate backup conduit is installed then other information could end up being copied from you Visor to the backup directory. Also, a given conduit can access information outside of its associated application. Thus, if this is a custom conduit, it could access other information on your Visor. If this is an off-the-shelf conduit, then this is very unlikely.
