Red face

i'm having an extension conflict!

i installed palm desktop a little over a week ago and had no problems until i started crashing yesterday - memory problems and (a first for me) the finder unexpectedly(!) quitting. conflict catcher was unable to successfully pinpoint the problem, but my intuition said it was the toolbar extension of palm instant desktop, so i disabled it and all seems to be peachy. the only problem being i don't have that cool little feature anymore. i've very recently downloaded dropstuff 5.12, and a few zip files, installed multimail, but i can't figure out where the real problem is. i'd like to resolve things amicably with the instant desktop, eternal banishment seems a bit hasty.

i'm a macos 8.5 user.

any thoughts?

Matty,

I was having a similar problem on MacOS 8.5. Upgrading to 8.6 solved the problem for me, that was an incidental benefit, BTW. <g>

FWIW: The Palm software runs pretty well on MacOS 9 too!

mcgaw, good to hear about OS9, there were some earlier posts about some OS9 users having Hotsync problems (only getting one synch per install of Palm desktop)...this must be a configuration-specific problem.

Now I can order a new Mac without any qualms about my Visor having problems!

I seem to have the same "finder has unexpectedly quit" error when I had the Palm Instant Desktop running on my iMac (OS 9). So, I took it off as well as took the "Serial Port Monitor" out of my "Startup Items" folder. Then the problem went away. I guess I should do a bit more fine tuning to see whether or not it was just the "Serial Port Monitor" that was causing the problem. Thoughts?

Angry

Ed,

I only have one thing to say about the serial port monitor, and I'd probably best not say it here.

I had more problems with my PowerBook thanks to that, that, that... "thing" than I've ever had with almost any other computer / program.

When I was runnning Palm Desktop 2.5 and using my Palm (this was BV (before Visor)), I had a running battle with Palm Computing. Their attitude was this, "Since no one else is reporting this problem*, you are the only one having it, so it must be something unique to your configuration." And that is a quote from an email from their support folks.

With the Visor and USB syncing, I don't worry anymore.

-- Michael

* My problem was that the serial port monitor was causing my PowerBook to freeze when the modem was being closed. I'd been using Keyspan's PDA serial to USB adapter to hook my Palm IIIx's cradle to the PowerBook.

mcgaw,

yeah, i hear ya. I don't even know why that thing "automatically" shows up in that folder. Since I'm USB synching, and have an iMac, that thing is annoying.

Ed,

In the hotsync manager, did you uncheck all the "Local Setup" and "Modem Setup" boxes on the "Serial Port Settings" tab?

And if that doesn't get rid of the serial port monitor, just go disable the darned thing in the extentions manager.

OS9 might increase your unhappiness exponentially, matty. In any case, it doesn't cure all Palm Desktop/Serial Port Monitor ills...

Hi guys;

Thanks Mcgaw, it seems to work now.

Matty, I agree with Penguin, OS 9 caused me all kinds of grief. I had to upgrade other software and drivers before I got that thing to work with my peripherals.
