Thumbs down

Handspring notified me there would be no upgrade offer for current Handspring customers.

Bad idea. Many companies, such as AT&T and Gateway offer upgrade programs.

I won't be looking to Handspring when it's time to upgrade my PDA. I currently have a VDx, Eyemodule, Stowaway keyboard, Back-up Module, modem, 2MB Memory upgrade, etc.

Instead of reinvesting monies in technology I trusted, I'll keep what I have until it's time for a complete overhaul... at which time, I'll find another PDA.

Have you got your $250 worth out of your Visor? That's not chump change, but it's better value for money than you'd get from Palm, and way better than you'd get from other handheld platforms.

And none of them provide upgrade offers either.

I guess you're hoping that one of the Linux handheld vendors will have money to burn when the time comes to replace your next handheld. Because it's certain nobody else is making you a better offer.

I'll make you one... if you want to switch from the Visor to the Palm, I'll help you out, I'll trade you a Palm Portable keyboard for your Visor Stowaway keyboard. Even up. What you say?

Good luck finding a PDA manufacturer that will allow you to upgrade.

Why? ALL of those will work with a Prism and Platinum Visor.

you werent paying attention. the ONLY difference between the VDx and the Platinum is processor speed and the OS rom. VDx DOES support 16 greys and is not a slouch either. Upgrading to the platinum is a waste of money if you have the VDx. its better to ***** about how f**ked up handspring is. in the meantime, overclock and save your money if you cant tell the difference.

So my VDx will display in 16 shades of grey...
Can you fill us (lay-people, common PDA users) in on how to accomplish that?
And, CA-boy, if you curse at me you might hurt my feelings! =)
You mentioned it in the beginning of this thread as your reason for wanting to upgrade to 3.5 in the first place.

Seriously, I'd love to see images in 16 grays. If a schmuck like me can get it to happen (hey, I built a CF adapter!), I'd love to know how!
Thanks.

In an effort to answer my own question, I came across this thread.
Mucho helpful ... and for those curious, batteries beware!

OS3.5 also supports 16-shades of grey. That is, the OS supports it. HandSpring only supports it in hardware, but not in software. Thus, some programs don't take advantage of it (i.e. AvantGo). Do we really expect programmers to program in special support for the Visor's 16-grey mode when they can rely on the OS?

There used to be a hack that let you play with 16 color greyscale. I played with it a bit, and I don't see the point except in image viewers... the display hardware on the Visor is really not up to supporting that mode well.

Ummmmm, among programmers, bypassing the OS and programming directly to the hardware is generally considered to be a Bad Thing.
If you program to the OS, and the powers that be come out with a new unit with a different CPU, your program will still work.
If you bypass the OS, chances are your program will break on the new CPU.

Question

Couldn't one replace the rom with flash rom? There are places that replace Palm M100/IIIe's rom with flash rom, so I imagine it shouldn't be too difficult for Visor?? One probably needs the new OS dump from Prism or the Platinum though.
