Is it just me? Does (doesn't) it make sense, especially for those of us poorer than others, to buy the regular Visor and just add the extra megs of memory via springboard when were ready?

Well, not really. I don't know how much the new springboard will be, but when you buy it, that will put you that much closer to having spent $249. Consider also the fact that when you've got the RAM springboard in the slot, you can't use another springboard.

Still, in your defense, I've read posts from a lot of people who owned a Palm with 4MB saying that they had a hard time using up all of the storage space. These Palm OS programs are, after all, pretty tiny.

But then again, we used to think a 20 MB hard drive was HUGE! Nowdays, 4GB seems small, and I've filled up that much. I guess the same thing will eventually occur with PDA's.

well, you can get the standard visor and add a 8MB flash memory springboard, but i think that the springboard would override the base memory.

also keep in mind that the flash memory springboard is going to retail for about $80. add that to the $179 for the standard visor, the combination would cost you $10 more than the deluxe.

I believe the 8MB springboard is in addition to the base memory...didn't someone posting here talk about moving files back and forth 'twixt card and internal mem?

Personally, I simply don't like being limited. I don't want a 2MB machine with an 8MB Springboard because then my Springboard slot is gone. Give me a base of 8MB for all my stuff (my IIIx has 700k of 4MB and diminishing) so that I can keep my Springboard open for something else.

ChrisB makes an interesting point: Palm apps are pretty small.

I'm not sure what controls what -- do larger apps drive an increase in space, or does the decreasing cost of space allow for larger apps? Not really important, but it is interesting to look at the change in how apps are written. In the C-64 days, it was finesse, with small apps, necessary because of limited space. Now it's brute force with huge apps, since the space is available. I hope increased interest in more memory for Palms doesn't do the same thing for Palm apps...

I'd have to say it's an increase in system resources that leads to sloppy code. PalmOS apps should remain pretty tight since they're limited to a 16MHz processor. However, I could see a few games showing up that use 1+MB of datafile(s) now that there's systems with more than 2MB of storage available. Anybody out there working on a PalmOS Doom port?
