Cool

PDABuzz.com has a picture of the new Visor Edge on its website. Handspring is rumored to have a press conference scheduled for Monday.

I live in the Bay Area...can I start lining up outside of their building? It can be like the Harry Potter book. Maybe they'll start selling them at midnight if we let them know...

But I'm NOT going back to monochrome!!!!

Monochrome it is

I've got news for you... Latest rumors show that the Edge is a monochrome device. Which makes me wonder--do we really need a fifth Handspring model, especially if it's monochrome? I know they want to keep up with the m505 from Palm, but I don't think the Edge is the answer.

Arrow Dunno

Dunno. I am thinking the unthinkable. Downgrading my Visor Prism to an Edge.

Yardie, I wouldn't call switching to the Edge "downgrading". Yes, color is great, but not at the expense of portability.

While the IIIc is not quite the device that the Prism is, a lot of Palm OS diehards (myself included) ran out to buy them the day they were released. While my unit was sound from a build standpoint (no cracked case, no flickering screen, no recalcitrant buttons), it was just too damn big. Since I "upgraded" from a Palm Vx, I was used to that form factor. In the end, I sold it and bought another Vx - and I wasn't alone. The iPAQ takes care of my color fix, but in spite of all its cool multimedia features and sheer processing power, I use my Vx a helluva lot more. Why? Because it fits in my pocket (in the hard case, no less).

I may not like the design of the Edge, but I like the size.

Yep, me too. My wife can have a pda that shows our son in vibrant 16-bit color and I can have a pda that's visible while walking in one of the local state parks trying to forget his latest antics. Depending on what's revealed at the press release I might wait a bit (if that's possible for me) to see if they make add color that is visible outside. I love the looks of that thing. I think I read somewhere that the screen is going to be similar to the m100. It doesn't look like there is much overhang on either side, so this might be the smallest Palm ever.

I hope the press conference means that we'll get a release sooner rather than later.

What about that stylus on the side? Does it really snap in? Doesn't that seem.... breakable?

Lightbulb

The thing is: do we really know that the Edge is mono? When PDABuzz' editor first mentioned having a photo of the Edge, I asked him whether it was mono or color. He said that as far as he could tell from the picture, it was monochrome. We've all seen the same picture now, and I can't be reasonably sure that isn't color, since the screen's off. Over at Geek.com, a me-too article repeated DaBuzz's info was replied to by a poster who "knew someone at Handspring" and insisted that the Edge is actually 16-bit color, with 16MB of memory. Needless to say, I have serious doubts about that, but I guess we'd all like to dwell in hope. Oh well, we'll just have to wait until Monday (actually, the s@#* may hit the fan on Handspring's site Sunday evening).

OK - if it's color and has 16MB of RAM, I might have to eat my shoes and buy one. But if my instincts are right about this, it's just a rebodied Platinum.

Bad news, and good news

It is a rebodied Platinum. Same processor, same memory. There's an article on CNet today. At $399, it'll get wiped out by the Palm m500, which will be the same price.

The good news is, the Platinum will probably drop in price, as will the Palm Vx(for die-hard Palm fans), and the Visor Prism(Palm's m505 is set to debut at $449).

If I were looking to buy, I'd go for the reduced-price, established models. The Visor Edge, I think, will be ultimately referred to as the "Visor Bust."

The Edge will probably be a mono system, but the CNet article qualifies everything as "sources say". Let's wait and see what happens

And? Granted the m500 has a sexier case, but if the two products are roughly the same size, why would I want the product without the Springboard connection? There are tons of people out there with modules that would have to be abandoned by switching to the Palm.

Of course, if the m505 is $449 and the Edge is $399, that's a different story.

Exclamation Let's get Real!

Palm Vx $399.00
monocrome
8MB
Flash Ram
O.S 3.5

I can't imagine palm for any reason selling a COLOR M505 for anywhere near $450. common..... the M505 is supposed to be EVERYTHING the Vx is + color, and a ton of other stuff. Not a marketing exec in his/her right mind would sell a 5X better unit for a 12% price increase. It's not going to happen.

In the same right. Why shouldn't a Visor Edge sell for $400-$500? It's everything a Palm Vx is. Plus it has springboard expandability. Palm did just fine selling the Vx at $400 (A healthy profit I have to assume) Why can't Handspring? The way I look at it..... If Handspring can make a decient enough profit on the edge maybe they won't show a financial loss next year. Not showing a loss means maybe they will have more money for R&D. More money for R&D usually equals Better Products.

sorry....... Want to go home now......

Arrow The color m505

I think that I read from Palmstation that the color m505 will be in the $600's about the same price as the high end PPC's.

Because the Visor Edge will be using OS 3.5 with no way to upgrade it. CNet reports that both the Edge and the m500 will go for $400, but the m500 will use OS 4.0 and still include Flash ROM. The Vx will drop in price or be discontinued, and the m500 will be the replacement at that price. The Visor Edge is supposed to include its own smaller expansion slot to compete with Palm's SD. The big question for me is, will the Edge be bundled with the Springboard sled adapter? If not, how much will it be? The cynical side of me thinks the answers to those 2 questions are "No," and "about $150."
