note: my netgear card IS not happy with REdhat 7.0's tulip driver. In fact here own driver doesn't work. Otherwise it's a great card, windows loves it!

Unbelievable!

While researching which handheld to buy for our company to test, I found the wired ethernet module for the Handspring Visor. I nearly jumped for joy! The idea of having a handheld I could use to probe my network from just about any location was an epic event. To be able to telnet, ping and logon to various devices with a handheld just made my day.

Being able to hotsync from anywhere on our network is an added bonus!

At this time, wired is not an option. We are a manufacturing facility and wireless is not in the budget at this time.

Xircom, I have used their equipment from the time of the parallel port model for notebooks. They have made some great products and continue to do so. But you blew it this time. THERE IS A LARGE MARKET FOR THE WIRED MODULE! Just ask the thousands of IT professionals what they want!

Do you suppose the cancellation has anything to do with the Intel takeover? Maybe they are being requested to streamline their lines?

Still Sucks. I would love to have a wired ethernet adaptor for all the reasons stated before!

These folks are developing wired ethernet cradles for PalmOS and PocketPC handhelds...maybe they could be convinced to build an ethernet module...

Unlikely. There's almosty no relationship between what these do and what a wired ethernet springboard would do.

i know this is old news, but i've been thinking how a wired ethernet sb would help me out. i'm an is manager and the ability to have a troubleshooting tool in the palm of my hand without having to shell out 5k for a fluke or like device is greatly desired. no boot time, pinging, perhaps some diagnostic apps or a palm sniffer would be awesome. as it is, i have to lug around a laptop. they could even charge a pretty penny for it, as most users businesses would probably foot the bill. my co would gladly shell out three hundred bucks for one if not a little more. i could understand if xircom has found technical obstacles, but i believe if there are none, then the market is there. i would by one for my entire staff.

Not quite what we wanted, but...

I wrote an email to the guys at Portsmith and they informed me that they will have a version of their ethernet cradle available in June for the Visor and Visor Deluxe. Now, it does have an external power supply and can not be used with my targus keyboard, but at this point there aren't may other options out there.

Another thing that concerns me is that apparently Handspring has changed the specs for their spring board with the newer Visors (ie competing standards and incompatibility). If this is true, then I think that we'll never see anything like an ethernet mod for this unit.

My company was in the process of developing a hand-held bootp server for use with industrial automation equipment when we saw the xircom announcement of a wired ethernet card for the handspring visor. Since most of us are visor users, we saw this as the answer to our problem and stopped the bootp server development. Then we heard that xircom has dropped the product. We are very interested in developing this product, either by buying the design from xircom or developing our own (we have our own stack) or buying a chipset with a stack already in it. My questions are: how much are people willing to pay? and How many will you buy? My concerns are: 10 Mbaud bandwith will overwhelm the visor microprocessor and ethernet power consumption may eat the batteries. You might be able to do telnet sessions but you probably will have very little luck using it as a sniffer.

Use external batteris, and make an AC adaptor avible. At firts I said I would only pay $99 for this, but lookign at the cost of the wirless version, I think anything under $179 is good. I myself will buy only 1, but I will try to get as many more posible sold! MY school ignores me on most everything OItry to talk some sence into them about so.. IF you do go through with this, I will be a happy and helpful beta-tester! Good luck. Seeing VC, this if priced right, could be a very popular module!

I'd say around or below $150 would be appropriate for a wired module. The idea of a battery pack and/or AC adapter would be a good one too. I would love to get one for my VDX to use in testing Network ports and use PalmVNC with. Another willing tester available here.

i would have been interested a week ago, but i've decided to get the handera. trg seems to listen to the users so they enhanced their os to use ne2000 support. palm users say they needed more memory, trg put a cf slot on the pro. they need ethernet and modem, they adapted the os to use cf peripherals. users wanted to use the peripherals and memory, they put a cf and mmc slot. i love my prism, but my major knock is how they seem to disregard user input. i send trg/handera a question and i get a personal response. i write to handspring and i get an automated response that is actually an advertisement. i love my prism and will still use it, but it will be number two after my handera arrives.

p.s. don't flame me handspring owners, i gave handspring a shot, but they let me down.
