I was just curious whether you planned on upgrading right away, later on, or not at all. I plan on upgrading soon, but since I just dropped the cash on my TiBook and added some more RAM, I may wait until DVD playback is there.

So when are you upgrading?

I've been kinda torn on this one.

As a Unix guy, having access to Perl, C compilers, emacs, etc, has a lot of sex appeal for me. However it basically boils down to the fact that there is no support for some of the hardware and software I need to use right now. Granted, I can always dual boot into 9.1, but dual booting (or rather the lack of a need to) was one of the reasons I wanted to move to Mac/OSX.

Soooo, basically I think I'm going to wait for the release of Puma in July, and see what the landscape looks like then.

From what I've read, Puma is the code name for the OSX upgrade to come this summer. Supposedly it'll include DVD playback, more device support, performance improvements.
This is the version that Steve Jobs is supposed to do his usual splashy release with at MacWorld in July (at least I think that's where it's happening. I don't remember exactly). I'm assuming so will most of the software and hardware vendors that really want to support OSX.

I would have used something like OSX 1.0/1.1, etc, but I haven't seen anything that indicates real release numbers have been determined yet.

FYI, Saturday's release is supposed to be code named Cheetah.

I'm currently running the last of the beige box Mac's. I mean that literally, I bought it a week before the blue and whites came out. This is my take on this. I am running a G3 333Mhz tower with 224MB RAM. I have a DVD player, a 10X Sony SCSI burner and a USB PCI Card. I am currently running OS 9.0.4. And I also use Virtual PC Win 2000 (version 4 for you die hards) on a regular basis.

According to resources...OS 9.1 does not support PCI cards for USB...is that correct? (I guess that could be directed at the Apple employee in this forum!) If it is true, backward compatability would be an issue even is OSX! As much as I love the sound of it...I don't want to lose the functionality of my CF card reader and my Photo 870 Epson over an OS upgrade...so to me, the wait is no big deal.

One last comment....I LOVE APPLE!

I'm fine with sticking to OS 9.1 right now. I may upgrade down the road a ways, depending on cost.

I participated in the beta program...so I had to at least buy X or lose my rebate. I used it exclusively for about three months...and I really loved certain aspects of it...I hate to say anything is crash proof...but it was as close as I have ever seen (I have both Mac and Windows). I had a few apps crash...but the OS never did.

However...I don't think I will upgrade for awhile...I'll have it installed...but won't be using it...because the apps I use the most...LiveMotion, Dreamweaver and Photoshop...aren't available.

But...as soon as they are...you bet I will switch over...it rocks.

The best thing about the introduction of OS X is that OS 9 will be left alone so things can stabilize somewhat! I'll stick with 9.0.4 for now and maybe upgrade to 9.1 if I decide I just gotta have iTunes or the iMovie 2 upgrade.

I'll keep up with some of the OS X goings-on but am certainly not going to be an early adopter.

I'm waiting, for at least a little while. If I had a dual-proc machine I'd probably get it right away, but I don't and there doesn't seem to be any need to rush and spend $130.

Cool Hmm....

Well even though I'm a PC user, I am keeping a close eye on Mac OS X. If the OS turns out to be as cool and innovative as Apple (and Mac users) say it is, and if Apple delivers more compelling/cost competitive G4s...I may end up with a PowerMac by summer! I'm considering a Mac, even more so, after reading the system requirements for Windows XP...256MB Ram bare minimum! In fact, Microsoft recommends that you purchase a new high-end PC for best results. So, I have to buy a Pentium 4 just to push the new OS along? I was planning on upgrading to a new system by summer anyway, but I had no idea it would be just so I could "upgrade" to a new version of Windows!

Ah, Microsoft at its best.

WHAT is MS thinking? I thought XP was a complete re-write of windows...correct? You'd think they could take all of the bloat out of it by now.

As much as I still think linux is incredibly clunky as a consumer OS, I have to hand it to them for making a respectful OS that runs on my P133 with 48MB of RAM.

MS...you are shooting yourself in the foot with this one.

Software has always been the driving force behind people buying new computers. PC games like Quake 3, the upcoming Black and White, etc. nearly force you to upgrade to a 32MB+ video card, for example.

It's just unfortunate that MS has made the operating system require so much hardware, when the whole point of an OS is to manage your resources, not consume them all!

I think software writers should all be given last year's computers for development purposes, so they're forced to write programs more people can use. I just imagine folks at Microsoft sitting around with dual GHz P3 systems, not understanding the plight of those who have 350MHz machines.

LOL! It's funny you should say that...because that is exactly the same machine I have now! And as much as I like Win2k, my system just barely pushes it along. My question is; if XP is going to consume 256mb, how am I going to use such a system for professional work? Imagine how much memory the OS will consume while running Photoshop/Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Flash, which is what I use on a daily basis. Am I going to need 500MB+?

As you said; It's just unfortunate that MS has made the operating system require so much hardware, when the whole point of an OS is to manage your resources, not consume them all! My thoughts exactly. Since I'm using Win2k now, I had assumed the system requirements would be the same for XP. I was blown away when I discovered this revelation! Why bother even upgrading to a faster PC when XP will just slow it right back down to the same performance levels I get on my aging Pentium II 350.

God help anyone who bought a Pentium 4 system. Wait until they discover the price of upgrading their RAMBUS memory.

Macs are starting to look very good to me right now. Between the new elegant OS and hardware, I find myself ready to say goodbye to my boring beige box.

Talking Woo Hoo

I came home Saturday after some errands...and lo and behold...Mac OS X was sitting there. Apple shipped it and scheduled it for Saturday delivery...no extra charge.

So I reformatted my iBook (not necessary, but wanted to) and installed it. I was part of the beta test...and all the annoying things I wanted them to fix...have been fixed.

One of my biggest problems with OS X beta is that when I ran Dreamweaver through emulation...it was always crashing...but it has stabilized...and they have added all sorts of new tools for running OS9 and X at the same time.

I have to say...this version is sweet...

I may actually switch over now...if Dreamweaver works well.

Anyone has any questions...let me know and I will try to answer best I can.

Here is summary of CNET's review of Windows XP beta 2:

While we're talking compatibility, though, our biggest beef with XP is its system requirements--they're simply massive. You need, essentially, a new or extremely recent computer, 128MB of RAM (at least; our test laptop was decked out with 320MB), 2GB of free disk space, and, if you're upgrading, you must have Windows 98 or above. In fact, Microsoft says you'll have the best experience only if you buy a brand-new system with XP preinstalled. That's a pretty hefty investment in an untried operating system. Unless you're planning to buy a new system when Windows XP hits the shelves, your XP experience likely won't be as smooth as Microsoft hopes. Though Windows XP may be, as Gates and company have said, the most important release since Windows 95, it's not an upgrade you should consider lightly.

And I got this from WinInfo.com XP review:

System Requirements:
Though I argued with company engineers over this point, Microsoft is listing the minimum system requirements for Windows XP as a Pentium III processor with 64 MB of RAM, though they do recommend 128 MB of RAM. Personally, I think this is unrealistic. I recommend a mid-level Pentium III processor with at least 256 MB of RAM. Before you fire off an angry email, however, let's get something straight: RAM is cheap, and Windows XP will perform dramatically better if you can exceed 128 MB. So there's no reason not to do so, unless of course you're running an older system that might not have this type of expansion possibility. But in such a case, you're not exactly a candidate for Windows XP anyway.

This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you access applications from within OS X? I'm a Mac novice, and every time I play around with one, I always end up asking..."Where the hell are my apps"? In Windows they are always under Start/Programs. But where does Mac OS X locate its programs?

Well under the previous versions of the Mac OS...there was no set place for applications. That was part of the beauty...you had complete control of the placement of everything. The problem you were probably running into is that you can put your apps anywhere...in any folder you like. When you install an app you tell the Mac where you want to place them. So each person may have theri Macs set up differently...but there is one folder you can look in....called Applications.

In the new Mac OS X...it is a little more structured...applications are stored in the Application folder.

The best feature of all (I am a Mac/Windows user) is how freaking stable this OS is...nearly crash proof...because even if an app crashes...it doesn't affect the OS. Just relaunch the app.

I thought I would share a screen shot.
