What did Donna actually SAY?

There's been lots of speculation about Visors and Springboards based on just a Yahoo few-paragraph story. It's disappointing to me also, since I am starting to acquire accessories for my VDx and VPL (stowaway, handcam, wired modem). I don't have time right now, but you might want to listen to what Donna actually said...

I couldn't wait so I did listen. They said essendtially there are two market segments: "communicator" and "traditional organizer", and they are "in transition" and will eventually "exit the [traditional] organizer segment." As of now, they still support the Neo/Pro, and these are important sales.

Seems that if Treo does include Palm OS, then they could just keep the Treo's SB capability, with an add-on sled, like the edge. I do hope they don't totally abandon springboard, since that is the only place you can get true innovation in the PDA business.

I sure wouldn't want to invest $ in Handspring these days, as an investor, since in the "communicator" business they are going up against Samsung and Nokia.

Quote: Handspring's earnings conference call will be webcast on its Web site at www.handspring.com, live at 2 p.m. PST (Pacific Standard Time) on Tuesday, January 15th , 2002, and archived through Friday, January 25th , 2002.

The audio replay of the company's Q2 conference call can be accessed via telephone after 4:30 p.m. PST Tuesday, January 15th, 2002 until 4:30 p.m. PST Friday, January 25th, 2002 by calling (858) 812-6440 and entering the reservation number 20163013

Unfortunatly, I think the Treo is basically a Visor with a visorphone hard wired into the springboard slot in a better form factor. It would make sense to combine the two and not have to reinvent the wheel. Unless they can get some innovation and make a second SB slot, I doubt we'll be seeing ANY new HS devices with the SB.

Angry I listened and she said...

that Handspring is transitioning out of the organizer market. She repeated several times that the exit was "not today" which means to me that it could be as soon as tomorrow, that they have no pland to support the Visor or Springboard and that everything is geared towards the Treo and the communicator market (which is a mistake IMHO).

When asked to clarify she said that there is no time frame (which is a load of crap, they definatly have a time frame) and that it was "not tomorrow".

Which all adds up to "the Visor and Springboard are dead or dying and we don't give a rip about all the developers who have supported us".
