Lightbulb

Having recently discovered some performance enhancing reg hacks for win2k I decided it was time to install win2k on my laptop. About 2.5 minutes aftering finishing the win2k install I know 2 things.

1. Windows 2000 inherently doesnt support redirecting serial communications across IR. There are a number of microsoft kb articles that plainly state that if you want serial remaped to IR in win2k to go bugger off.

2. That a number of people mistakenly posted that palmdesktop 4.0 allows the use of IR syncing in win2k. And that palmdesktop 4.0 by itself is in no way helpfull and in the professional opinion of a bunch of people that posted reviews on palmgear it is a peice of crap.

Several minutes later I know:

Outside of that I could find no usefull instructions for getting ir to work so puttering around in the latter hours of the evening and early morning I went thourgh the palm.com software in search of something that might work. To my supprise I found:

http://palm.www.conxion.com/PalmDesktopUpdater.exe

Which when installed after the handspring palmdesktop 3.1 adds in the ability to hotsync via IR while completely removing the ability to hotsync via USB. So IR works sans 1 detail:

To enable IR HotSync:

1. Exit HotSync Manager.
2. Go to the Windows Control Panel and double click the "Wireless Link" icon.
3. In the "Image transfer" tab, uncheck the box for
"Use Wireless Link to transfer images from a digital camera to your computer".
4. Disable any other application that opens the IR port.
5. Restart HotSync.
6. Go to the HotSync menu and check the "Infrared" menu item.
7. You can now synchronize via IR.

So I guess I cant have usb and IR syncing. It apears that for the moment it is one or the other.

Oh well I'll just have to remove the pcmcia-usb adapter card from my laptop. You win some ya lose some. Why is it people with visors have to work so hard just to not to lose ALL of the time.

Search the boards for some previous posts that explain how, by saving some files from the USB install, you can have both at the same time.

Searching Visorcentrals discussion board was the first thing I did. It yelded no positive results. Just some people *****ing that IR is not mapable as a serial port in win2k and a bunch of people yammering on about palmdesktop 4.0 which having tried; It does not work. Palmdesktop 4.0 is serial only. Unless the search is leaving out messages in the search: There is no way present way to use IR and USB in win2k, its one or the other. But at least my IR works now.

Here is an article from PalmPower.com that shows you how to use Palmdesktop 4.0 with your Visor.

Thank you but if you install the HS desktop module that supports usb you loose IR. I have tried this also. Before I switched to win2k I was using palmdesktop 4 with the HS PD 3.1 and my IR maped to a serial port. IN WIN2K IR CANNOT BE MAPED TO A VIRTUAL SERIAL PORT. It just doesnt work. Win2k is designed specificly so IR cannot be mapped to serial. The Palmdesktop updater adds in win2k IR hotsyncing support without the need of having IR mapped to a serial port. But it removes USB support.

With the new prisms and platinums that run a version of palmOS that supports IR syncing, what Palmdesktop software do you get with it if you are running win2k ? Does it support IR & USB ? It should. Wouldnt that make sense ? The operating system that the palm device is running inherently supports IR syncing as well as usb.
