Thumbs down Treo 90 is a ripoff if it replaces Prism

If Handspring acually replaces Visor Prism with the Treo 90, I think that would end up being their stupidest desicion theyve ever made. Lets think about it, Prism and Trea 90 are way diffrent from eachother and both are made to do diffrent tasks. Visor Prism is made to be an Handheld COMPUTER, a device that is EXPNADABLE and organized. While this Treo 90 is made to be COMPACT with a built in keyboard and basically just a light weight color device with no expansion whatsoever.

If the Prism will be discontinued from a device that has less color than it, not expandable, and something that does not even represeent the Treo line, as it is supposed to be wireless, then that would be insane!!

The Prism is made to act as a mini computer and the Treo 90 is well Im not exactly sure why it was made other than to be a PDA with some color, a built in keyboard, lighter and SD slot.

The Prism is nothing compared to a Treo 90. I would hate to see the Prism replaced by something worse from it.

Just me thoughts

P.S. Can someone even explain to me why the Treo 90 was put into the Treo line? Because I thought all Treos were supposed to be wireless?

Actually, to be more specific, the 90 has a memory slot. An expansion slot would be like the one Palm handhelds have - SD/MMC and SDIO. Truly expandable (like with their new Bluetooth SD card). The expandability of the Treo is abyssmal by comparison.

Check the website closer. It has a _memory_ slot, not an expansion slot. What a waste.

The good...

The 90 looks like a nifty little device that might steal some people that would otherwise be buying low-end Sonys and color Palms- it appears priced to compete in that area. It also looks to compete against the Zarius with that built-in thumbboard.

With Palm 4.1 and 16Mb, it should be a great option for a lot of people, especially new customers and others not tied to the springboard slot.

By recycling the form factor of the Treo, they should also be saving themselves some bucks, and *might* start getting out of their slump!

I KNOW they are putting a lot of their hopes on the Treo line, but there are still people who just want a decent PDA- and this small, light, colorful and powerful unit may be the perfect answer for a lot of people. Heck, when my Prism died, I might have gone for this instead of a refurb Sony N610- had it been available!

The bad...
No Springboard irritates me and other long-time fans. Now that I don't have one, I find I really don't miss it- as long as I have my Memory Stick. I find that 90% of my Springboard usage was memory and back-up.

Prism replacement? That is up to you personally. It is really not a true replacement since it uses such a different form factor and has no Springboard, but until they do a color Edge or Neo, I think it is a decent choice.

I am another who wishes they would have gone with a jog dial. Oh well.

The ugly...
Well, 'ugly' is probably not the right word, but it is the next word in the series, so... the word is 'accessories'.

OK, the thing has a built-in keyboard. There will still be times we will want something bigger, and I bet it does not use the GoType or Stowaway the Deluxe does. Cases, styli, and other accessories will probably all have to be changed over for this new form.

Well... most of us had to do it to some extent when we shifted from Deluxe to Prism, or between some other forms. I guess we can do it again! Maybe this will teach us to stop buying so much stuff that can be so easily obsoleted. Maybe!

After all I have been though I am going to wait a year before I would even consider buying one (or any Palm/PDA related product for that matter), if nothing else, I have learned from all this PDA madness, a year can make a HUGE difference!! (look at the Prism one year after it was released!, how about the GEODE Gps, the Minijam, etc.. Patience in this market seems to be rewarded..) By then the 90 will be 50% off I am sure!! I think I can live with my Prism for another year easily..

Another thing I don't like is the 90's SD slot is not I/O enabled.. that may make/break my buying decision.. if they choose to enable it or not.

Amen

I agree with Eric, except the year part, I belive it will be more like six months before we see the price drop. I am confuse by only one thing, why is it called a Treo when it isn't wireless? My own humble opion is that in the next year we will see a huge split in the Palm OS market. Half will want color, music, flim and what ever else can be shoehorned in to OS 5. The other half will want just the basics PDA. It will be an Interesting shake out. "people can't we just get along?" Time will tell

Unhappy Ever Feel Adandoned?

Very disappointed in their abandonement of the springboard slot. The Prism I bought about 5 months ago is probably going to be the last Handspring product I buy. Think I'll move to Sony or even (gasp!) one of the pocket pc pda's.

Thumbs down Goodbye Prism, so Goodbye Handspring...

I bought my Prism not long after it had been first released by Handspring, and I felt it to be the best choice of PDA available at that time. In fact, for a very long time after it's initial release it was still one of the best choices out there.

And then the Treos started to surface...

You could tell that Handspring was starting to phase out the original line of products - one price reduction after another. Now there's the 'replacement' for the Prism, the Treo 90. Ack. It wouldn't be so bad staying with the Prism, but it can only last so long before the lack of having flash rom capability hits, forever stuck at 3.5.2. Many of the reasons I why picked the Prism in the first place are no longer there with the Treo 90, and like everyone else here you're stuck with a bunch of Springboard modules and nowhere to take them. So much for that investment. Now, I'm thinking of getting either a Sharp Zaurus or an iPaq.

As much as it annoys me, you have to wonder what the third party Springboard module manufacturers are feeling now. Obsoleting the Springboard slot must be a kick in the teeth for them...
