Question

Hey all,
I didn't post this in "Howto/troubleshooting" because I don't really know if this is a *problem* or not...I saw a thread on this a while back but I'm not sure what the deal is now. I got a GVDx a week or so ago, and just noticed that when not in its plastic cover case, if you sit it down on a table, it wobbles. Closer inspection reveals that the back of it, over the HandSpring Logo, right below the SpringBoard port, bowes out a couple millimeters. It's possible to push it in (although, of course, it pops out again). If you don't have any modules installed, and are using the "drawer" filler module, then it also squeaks when you push on it. I called Tech Support and they said theirs was like this too, though I'm a little doubtful that ALL visors have this flaw. I was able to make a small fix for it by placing some adhesive felt on the four corners of the Visor, but I'm not quite sure this is the best solution. I prefer to use the leather case the Visor comes with instead of the hard screen cover case. Anyone notice this problem (or not) and have a fix for it?

Not all Visors have this problem, but some have. However, I do not know how common the problem is. My first Visor did not have any creaking problems at all, but my current Visor (replacement) has the same creaking back that you just mentioned. However, after a couple of weeks the creaking diminished. You could try to get a replacement Visor from Handspring if the creaking etc. does annoy you too much.
But keep in mind that the replacement unit you would get is most probably a refurbished unit, means that although the screen cover and probably the case are new, the "inside stuff" is used (although I guess tested for errors etc.). As long as your unit works OK, I would keep it. I had one replacement unit that was worse than the one I sent back, and I had to get it replaced.
IMHO, keep it and only have it replaced if you cannot stand the creaking etc. or you have additional problems with the unit.
As I said, the condition should get better after a couple of weeks (at least that was the case with my Visor).

Good luck!

Question

mc9,

Thanks for the reply...You said the creaking diminished, does the curved back get any better? My main issue is that when it's flat on the table, it wobbles (I am hesitant to use the hard case because I also use the soft leather case, and its just a pain to have to deal with both). Does the wobbling get better as well?

Yeah mine sticks out a little in the back too. That is where it creaks, only when the springboard cover is on. Let's narrow this down. What color back do you have and do you have the bulge and creak?

Blue Visor deluxe, Ice color back, bulge and creak.

Graphite Visor Deluxe. I was doing some research on VC and found there are two visor "revisions", A and B. Someone said this might be the version of the mold used. I think this could be related. Since you have a clear back, you can tell what revision you have, according to the other thread...What revision do you have?

I have Rev A. Maybe they did this to relieve some of the cracked case problems.

Question

I also read that one revision has a Palm logo on the battery cover and the other doesn't. Do you have one or not? I do.

Wink

I have an Ice VDx, and I do have the Palm logo on the battery cover (it's a Rev B, by the way [according to the sticker inside the battery case, but there's an A molded into the actual visor casing... hmm.]), and no squeaking or wobbling.

Unhappy

got a graphite Visor (not Deluxe), edition 1000E, bought in Croatia. It has the Palm sign on battery cover. Yes, it has the hump and it squeaks too... It looks like it's the graphite case... Still, it feels sturdy enough. I don't have any Springboards though, and I hope this doesn't affect the fitting of the module??!!

Doesn't affect anything (well...I have a backup module and it fits fine). Im hoping when I get one of the springboard modules that is slightly larger than the casing itself, that it won't wobble anymore because the springboard is higher than the hump...

My visor creaks a little bit on the sides, and I think it may be like this to make it more robust in falls (To paraphrase a parable" The tree breaks in the storm, but the reed bends, thus is left unharmed.)

I've dropped my visor more times than I can count, and so far no problems.
In my opinion, keep the creak!
