Does anyone know when the color CLIE is coming to the US...?
I'm on the verge of updating my VDx to a Prism, but now I'm wondering if I should wait for a color CLIE... Anyone know what kind of screen it uses..?
Are there any Japanese web sites..? A quick Altavista search for color+clie didn't turn anything up.
TIA

I too am waiting for the color Clie to arrive. It will have much better overall display reabablity than the Prism or Palm IIIc since it will use the exact same Reflective TFT display as the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC. That means, unlike conventional color PDAs, you will be able to read the screen on a Clie in direct sunlight.
The product should be available within the next 3 months. At least that is what SONY told me. I don't know what the list price will be.

i guess this is promising....
quote:
Speaking of Japan, Sony was actively promoting its CLIE PDA, which runs on the Palm OS but has a Memory Stick slot and is multimedia-enabled. A color version of the device is available already in Japan, but Sony has thus far withheld it from the U.S. market, much to the consternation of some gadget geeks. However, when asked yesterday when the device might hit American shores, a Sony representative said well, we have a big trade show in January. Any bets on a color CLIE at the Consumer Electronics Show? Sony also announced that wireless service provider GoAmerica will provide wireless Internet access for the CLIE, though neither side would say yet what that would look like (built-in antenna, attached sled etc.).

Well, here's a few photos of IIIc, Prism, and Clie side-by-side. Note Clie IS turned ON. BTW this guy's web site's top page is here(the page is written in Japanese). He's installed a jog dial to his VDx, and working on installing one on his Platinum.

This board is not working right! it's showing only a part of my post...this is the link to the photos of IIIc, Prism and Clie comparison.
http://kamakura.cool.ne.jp/mobiletake/Visor/color.html It's not Clie's black screen of death...it IS ON but you can see why a lot of Japanese color Clie owners are complaining.

interesting pictures, Taki. But could you explain what the problem is (or what the site is saying?) that is making the Clie screen so dark?
are there photos of the jogdial on the visor anywhere?

Hoser,
In the page he is just comparing three color palm devices...
Clie's screen is notorious for being dark because it's different from IIIc's & Prisms...I'll get more info when I have time.
Here's the photo of Jog dial visor

I edited Taki's post above to correct the URL link problem...
a little vbCode tutorial:
When using the URL= tag you need to enclose the link text in quotes (" ") or only the first link appears and the message truncates at that point. If you read the vbCode instructions for the URL= tag, they show the quotes.
quote:
the vB Code automatically generates a hyperlink to the URL that is encased. It will also ensure that the link is opened in a new window when the user clicks on it. Note that the "http://" part of the URL is optional if the address begins with www; if it does not, then you will need to include the full http:// part. In the second example above, the URL will hyperlink the text to whatever URL you provide after the equal sign. Also note that you DO need quotation marks inside the url tags.
URL=http://... needs to look like URL="http://..." (don't forget the [ and ])
Hope this helps...

That Jog Dial Visor looks amazing! but by the looks of it (i can't read Japanese
) it will only move selections up and down (essentially duplicating the functions of the up and down buttons on the visor). Doesn't the JogDial on the Clie also have the ability to select an item by pushing on the JogDial?
Thanks for the links Taki, REALLY interesting ideas.

MarkEagle, thanks for the fix & tip!
Hoser, yes, you are right about the Visor jog dial. It is only for up and down. And with Clie you can push the dial to select. I'll let you know more about Clie's screen in a couple days(my work is killing me!)...I don't remember exactly but I know it's not active matrix. BTW Ultimate Electronics has monochrome Clie on sale for $349.

Taki,
The color Clie's screen IS Active Matrix. As I stated before, its the same screen from the iPAQ. However, judging from the "dark screen" complaints, it seems to be missing the side light. Not sure why SONY would have left that out. It would make the Clie useless in low lighting.

Take has made a Jog Platinum. This one even does "push to choose"!

Foo, I'll look up what exactly Clie's screen is later.

Foo,
Well after searching Sony site I found out that Clie's screen is "SNT". Judging from Japanese, I think the "SN" part stands for "semi-translucent". Not sure what N stands for. Also it has backlight.
