Well, here lies another dead visor. Such a short, short life with so much memory left unused. (January 5 2000 to January 26 2000)

I am a little upset at this new adventure with the Handspring Visor. I am a bit taller than average at 6'3". I ended up slightly dropping the visor today onto a counter at a checkstand where I manage. The top left edge of the screen shattered inside the led. I have a nice looking piece of artwork in that corner, but now the visor is useless. Furthermore, now I am really scared about the strength of the visors. I carried a Palm Professional for 4 years (with a few random drops here and there) with no problems at all. I estimated the fall at less than 3 feet!

Called Handspring right away to see what could be done and they offered to send out a new one. I applaud them for that. Trouble is that I will be without my PDA for 2 weeks or more. I think the worst of it all is that I am supposed to do a presentation with my VisorD at a trade show this weekend. My company wants to roll them out to all upper management.

What do you all think about the strength and endurance of the Handspring units? And is there something that is not bulky that I can place over it and still use a belt clip with it?

Something not bulky to put over it? Check out the Rhodiana case. I swear by mine. http://www.rhodiana.com

Do spend the extra $2 for the optional lexan insert. Be sure to specify that you want the belt clip option.

Wow, all I can say is that my IVD has taken a couple of heart stoping drops and made it through like a champ (knock on wood). I thought mine was tucked nicely inside my breast pocket in my coat. Well, as I got out of my truck, bam, fell right out onto the pavement, probly about 4' fall. Mashed up some of the plastic on the corner around the stylus. After my heart started beating again, I picked it up, looked at the screen and turned it on again. Nothing wrong, no broken screen or even a flinch! I had it in my shirt pocket the whole time I was working at a metal finishing line, and leaned up against it on accident a couple of times without any problems. The only thing to report is that the plastic just ever so slightly creaks now when I gently squeeze the unit. I can accept that for the punishment I have doled out on it. It even took a small splash of water (dried off imidiately so I don't think it had time to seep into any cracks). Also if you are wondering what case I was using, I just had it in the snap on cover and the standard leather case that comes with a delux. Good luck Rodeoman.

I've noticed some posts saying that the visor's screen shattered easily, and some posts saying it was quite durable. Then I see posts about how a screen takes 6 months to fully harden. Putting this all together, I bet the people who's visor's screens survived falls have had them for longer. Thus making them stronger and fully hardened. Also, they could have ordered them earlier, and they might have been kept for a couple months for the screen to harden (?). I dunno, but I think Visor has given up on any attempt they did have at waiting for the screens to harden and is now just shipping them out right off the assembly lines because of the extreeme delays. Well, I think I'm just going to be extreemly careful in general, especially in the first six months.

I feel your pain... I too have recently had a loved one pass... But it's nice to know that Handspring will replace the first screen for free and mentioned in this article

I thought it was secure in my shirt pocket and i saw that my shoe lace was untied....

as it slipped out and toward the tiled bathroom floor i almost screamed!! it was about a 2-3 foot fall...the visor hit the tiled floor...the protective cover corner took the hit and popped off in one direction, sending the visor in the other....

end result:
no damage to the cover...no damage to the visor...for those that complain about the cover, here is one case where the 'pop-off' spring like feature saved my visor's life.

Sorry about the "death". I want to know, does ANYBODY have problems with the side of their Visors creaking for no valid reason when grasped? I have not dropped mine, but the side the I place my thumb on has a wonderful little duo-tone creak to it. It is very obnoxious!!

My IVDx has some creaking, but only when I actually give it a squeze. Under normal use conditions, no squeek. When I got my Visor, it was tight and noiseless, but I have slightly abused mine (dropped, pressed, and splashed) in the workplace environments I am sometimes in. So I mostly attribute the noises to my abuse. I am more afraid that Visor Protective Services will take mine away.
