Email via VPN

I've successfully setup access to our corporate network using MovianVPN. A connection is established and the client exchanges the key.

Great I thought, that's the hard bit done, so I fire up Eudora email and set up a mail account for our Exchange server. However, no matter what configuration I've tried I cannot seem to get the palm to recognise the exchange/incoming mail server.

Has anyone got any ideas where I'm going wrong, or point me in the right direction?

Talking to Exchange

I have yet to see any way to directly link to an Exchange server from the palm OS. I am sure Microsoft does not want that to happen. Avantgo has some software available for handhelds than talk to Exchange servers, but I don't know the specifics of it. Check it out at www.avantgo.com

I can dial in to my network with a modem (as MovianVPN does not support PPTP). I use the following to get my data of the exchange server.

1. I set up "network" as an option to Hotsync on my desktop PC at the office.
2. I dial in to my NT Server.
3. Using Chapura Pocketmirror Pro, I can Sync with all of my public folders in my Outlook profile.
4. Using the built-in mail application on the Palm OS, I can retrieve all of my mail in my "Inbox" - I do need to have Outlook running on my desktop for this part to work, so Outlook can retrieve my mail. I would not have this limitation if I had Exchange 2000.

This works OK for me, although it is not seamless. I will do a little research and see if I can find a better solution.

I get my mail directly from an Exchange 5.5 server at work. First, though, be sure your Exchange admin has configured POP3 support on the Exchange server. I think it is enabled by default, but I am not an Exchange admin and I don't really know.

First I dial in to our RAS server using either the Visorphone or a Handspring modem. I log into our NT 4.0 domain using the domainname/username format.

I use Eudora for Palm OS version 2.0.2. The only quirky thing is the username in the mail account, which is domainname/username/aliasname. Your Exchange admin can tell you your alias name. I also use the actual IP address for the POP and SMTP server name.

thanks reeseman, RAS now works (with the aliasname tip )

I would still like to use the VPN if possible. But for some reason, using the same mail account I set up for RAS, Eudora cannot detect the mail server.

I'm going to play around a little more trying to get the palm to recognise names/ip addresses on our LAN. Any ideas!?!?

the joy of success

after a couple of days trying to get set up I've finally achieved my latest holy grail

I made several tweaks to the encryption (IPSec) and DNS settings within movianVPN, placed some rules within the firewall to translate relevant IP addresses and then used reesemans tips to setup a Eudora mail account.

I'm now connected to my network, collecting exchange email and surfing my intranet through my VPN on my VPL - how cool is this.

Now I'm off to check how to re-write key pages on the intranet to support the palm browsers...

If you were using Surewave Mail , you would have saved yourself a couple of headaches IMHO.
