Hi Everyone:
I recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows ME. During the upgrading process, I unplugged the USB hotsync cradle. Now, when I try to hotsync, the Visor cannot get past the "contacting the computer" stage.
I have tried downloading the latest version of Palm Desktop listed on Handspring's site (3.1) and a soft-reset on the Visor.
The preferences listed on my hotsync manager read:
[Custom]
Mail (Synchronize the files)
Date Book (Synchronize the files)
Address Book (Synchronize the files)
To Do List (Synchronize the files)
Memo Pad (Synchronize the files)
Expense (Synchronize the files)
Install (Enabled)
Install Service Templates (Do nothing)
System (Handheld overwrites desktop)
The "Local USB" is checked off.
I have absolutely no idea why the hotsync process isn't working. PLEASE help me!
Thank you!

Do you mean there is or is not a checkmark next to "Local USB". If there is not, there needs to be one.

Did you have the cradle attached when you did the re-install? Also, did you select the USB option when asked during the setup?

I have the answer! Static electricity!
Just encountered the same problem and called Handspring's tech support - only on hold for three minutes. Unplug your USB connection. Restart your computer. Once back up, reconnect USB. I swear this is the advice of the tech guy, "Put your thumb over the pins in the cradle". This removes any static charge you might bring to it. Dock your Visor and hit the "sync" button. He solved my problem. This should work for you as well.

Still isn't working...
By "checked off" I meant that there IS a check to the left of the Local USB option. The computer is configured for a USB hotsync, and I chose that option during the software installation.
I tried the suggestions that I
a) "Unplug the USB connection. Restart your computer. Once back up, reconnect USB."
and
b) "Put [my] thumb over the pins in the cradle."
Sadly, the Visor still cannot hotsync. (Again, the Visor cannot pass the "connecting with the desktop" stage when I try to hotsync.
I have been using PDAs (a Palm IIIx) for more than 1 year, so I am familiar with how things should work. I really can't figure out what to do - everything appears to be set up correctly.
Any other suggestions?
Do you know if Handspring has a toll free technical support number?
Please help me!
Thank you!

Try plugging the cradle into another USB port, this can have the effect of redetecting the visor.
Try removing any "Unknown Devices" from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Hardware.
Unlikely, but try pressing down on the visor at the bottom, to give it a better connection to the pins, and then press the hotsync button (continue to press down on visor).
