Why I bough mine

I needed a PDA and the VDX offered the most bang for the buck. With $250 I don't believe that at the time (Dec 99) I could have bought even a lower end Palm model, but I could afford a device comparable in features to the Palm Vx (plus a Springboard slot and USB synching) for about half the price. For me, the VDX offered the most bang for the buck. Still today I think the VDX provides a very good value. With $250, you could get a Palm IIIxe or a comparable Visor Deluxe, if you pick Handspring's device, you get the bonus of the Springboard module and USB.

I have had my IVDx for almost a year and it still fulfills all my PDA needs and more (all I really *need* a PDA for is to keep me organized, but I use AvantGo on a daily basis and I play the occasional game). I for one do not plan to upgrade any time soon. Can't get wireless connectivity? I'll wait until I get to work or home to read my email or browse the 'live' web on a decent browser, thank you very much. If I cared enough about wireless connectivity, I would have shelled out the bucks for a Palm VII back in december.

All in all, I am very satisfied with my purchase of the IVDx.

Luckily I'm not waiting on the cell phones or other connectivity or my views might be different, but I have to side that the problem is with the module makers and not Handspring.

Handspring published the details of the Springboard slot and made it completely open. I find it hard to fault Handspring when the module makers change the game.

From what I've read it sounds like the module makers asked for new features that would enable their products and Handspring complied with the new OS version. Handspring is in a bad place on this one - put there by the module makers.

On the other hand, if the OS can be patched to support the new features, then Handspring either needs to produce it or announce their intention, or change their marketing about the upgrades via patches. If this can't be patched in, then their advertising is misleading.

I still think Handspring is wrong in not running with a flashable OS. The changes come too fast in this industry to not bury your head and assume things won't change *too* much. A flashable OS would solve this problem, give them added functionality, and make them more than equal to Palms with flashable OS's. The supply of flash RAMs was very tight when Handspring introduced the Visor and the VDx, and even while they were ramping up the Platinum and Prism. But it is easing now and will ease more after Christmas. It is time for a flashable OS.

My Treo 600 is my phone, my PDA, my watch, and my MP3 player. Oh yeah, I take a picture once in a while with it. Convergence is such a great thing.
