MemPlug, VFS, and Mapopolis

I read that somebody here is using Mapopolis with the MemPlug. I tried updating the MemPlug software to support VFS, but I have no idea where on the Flash memory card I'm supposed to be putting my map files. Any suggestions?

I believe that Mapopolis just puts them in the palm/launch directory. At any rate, you don't need to think about it yourself if you just sync the map to ram and then use mapopolis to move it.

Unfortunately, Mapopolis seems to move the whole dang map off the card in order to read it, so it's wicked slow.

Does anybody know of a map prog. that uses VFS that DOESN'T need to load the whole map?

You need to use Mapopolis to move your maps to the card. First, hotsync your maps to the handheld if that has not already been done. Second start up Mapopolis. Then, click on the map and click on Copy. When that is done, and it may take a minute or two, click on the map again and click on Delete (I think thats what the button is). The map is now on the card and off of RAM. Click Goto Card, click on your map, and click on view. This will move the map back to RAM. After you are done with Mapopolis and you exit the program, the maps will be deleted again from RAM.

I hope this helps.

Long long way. Just create a directory with name Palm/Programs/Mapopolis
and put all your databases there.

Cool

My setup is like this:

1. On the memplug SM card, I have a directory called /Maps/

2. ALL my mapopolis maps are moved into that directory

3. When I want to use mapopolis, I set PiDirect to use /Maps/ as the path and Enable PiDirect.

4. Use mapopolis as normal. (With NO mapopolis maps in main memory at all)

Notice, I didn't use Mapopolis to move the files at all. PiDirect did all the work.

Is anyone using MemplugSM and Mapopolis on a Visor Deluxe? Mapopolis 2.0 doesn't use the card, 3.0 beta has errors when coming up, finally comes up and can't see maps on card. If i use Mapopolis 2.0 and just store maps on the card, i can't tell what maps i'm looking at on the card because of the file name. Only in Mapopolis do you see the real map name. If i re-name them on the card i get an error when i try to move them to the RAM. I'm stuck. Am i missing something? Thanks.

I am using it on the 2MB Visor Solo! I use now mapopolis 3.0 beta (the latest) and here lies the catch with some of the above messages. One of the early 3.0 beta's would scan the whole sm card and it did not matter how the files were named. I had them renamed so that in 2.0 I could see what each map represented. After upgrading to a more recent version of the 3.0 beta, mapopolis did not scan the whole card anymore (which makes it load the map directory much faster), but it no longer recognized my renamed maps. To solve this I used, as also indicated in an earlier post, Mapopolis to move a map from Ram to the SM card. It put it in the Palm\Programs\Mapopolis\ subdirectory, but used a special scheme to name them. It seems that the file name has to be of the form: county--XX.pdb, where XX is the two letter code for the state. Once I renamed my other maps according to this format and moved them into the subdirectory, mapopolis sees them all. I wish that mapopolis would label there different beta's like 3.01b, 3.02b etc. In that way one would know whether you have the most recent one by just looking at the version number.

Yeah! Thanks Anton. You have to have the right directory set up. I guess Mapopolis can only communicate with that particular one. Now all my errors are gone and it moves the maps to and from the card. Ok, now i've got to figure out how to do that with doc files. thanks again.

Same thing with the doc files, you must have the correct directory set up. At least that ones documented.
