You have a corrupted app or database. It might not be WordSmith either. The most sure way to find the bad app is:
1) Hard Reset, check if ok
2) move everything out of the Backup directory in the PC into another directory (e.g. Backup1)
3) HotSync to get AddressBook etc. data back, check if ok
4) copy a few apps back to Backup
5) HotSync, check if ok
6) Repeat 4 and 5 until you have problems again.
I had the same problem. I had to get to group R-S-T before I found the problem app (RaceFever or SpaceTrader). Once they were deleted, everything was fine.
