"Palm's CEO Carl Yankowski flatly stated today that his company isn't going to be bought any time soon. "No one has approached me and I have no comment consequently,'' he told Reuters. He spoke today at the Bear Stearns Annual Technology Conference.

He also said that at an upcoming board meeting they will discuss breaking the company into two parts, one focused on the Palm OS and the other a hardware firm. Palm is talking with investment bankers about options for the two parts of the companies."

Maybe this way we can see some faster innovation on the Palm OS.
quote:
He also gave more details of his company's short-term plans to return to profitability. They are going to sell about $200 million in land originally planned for their corporate headquarters but will hold onto some of it for a smaller campus. They are also going to start using supply chain management software from SAP.

This is just sad.
quote:
...one major disappointment slipped in. Mr. Yankowski said that OS 5.0 is currently scheduled to be released in the second half of 2002. Previous statement had Palm's new OS coming out in the first half of 2002. OS 5.0 will run on chips based on ARM designs that run at much higher processor speeds than current Palms.

Another reason that Palm should split into two companies, they are holding the rest of the Palm developers/lisencees back.

Palm is guilty of being to comfortable at the top. They weren't too concerned with Pocket PC beating them out but the totally ignored how hungry the Palm OS Licensees were.

Its come to bite them in the butt.

That is exactly what I thought when I read about SAP. It was a mistake to even mention something like that in that kind of a meeting.

3-4Q 2002 is a painfully long time to wait for ARM support. That means that those Palm devices will be out after, or at the same time as smaller, faster, sleeker PPC's.

Do you earn frequent flyer miles for getting airsick on the ground?

How do you all think Dubinsky and Hawkins react to news like this? Tears? Laughter? Indifference?

Is it really that difficult to develop a 1,5 MByte OS? Are they going to use one part of the split Palm Inc. only for 1,5 MByte?

By: Fat_Man @ 04:09 AM

If Pal does split into two separate companies, would that make it cheaper for another company like Sony, Microsoft, Handspring, Apple, or who-ever else to buy just the Palm OS part?

By the way, what's SAP?

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

Size says nothing about complexity....
I can imagine making an OS that has to be really efficient (in contradiction to MS based OSes) would be quite hard..

I was thinking the exact same thing! The Palm OS would be a nice acquisition for Handspring or Apple. I would hate to see the OS in the hands of SOny.

It's getting worse!!!

Palm CEO Carl Yankowski took a step towards resolving the company's Apple-like dilemma today by saying that Palm would rid itself of either its hardware or software business. He just wouldn't say which.

Not necessarily. Palm Software would not HAVE to be a public corporation. It could be privately held by the existing corporations. I envision a three-way ownership in the company as follows:

1/3 - Palm Hardware
1/3 - Handspring
1/3 - All other PalmOS liscensees.

Just my $0.0314159

Here's another from CNet's Rumor Mill:

----
Palm bomb diffused with aplomb

Last week, Palm Computing staffers got a scare as their Santa Clara, Calif., headquarters were evacuated in a bomb scare.

Skinformants say a Palm VP was roaming the halls when he noticed what appeared to be a propane canister and a black briefcase sitting unattended in the hallway. No word if the witness heard a ticking sound emanating from the stray vessels, but the company confirmed accounts that the exec immediately phoned security.

Security at the Palm campus prudently decided that bomb diffusion exceeded their job description, called 911, and evacuated the building.

While staffers awaited the bomb squad, Chief Executive Carl Yankowski returned from his lunch break. On inquiring why the personnel of his troubled company was milling around in the California sunshine on a Monday afternoon, Yankowski was told of the mysterious propane tank and briefcase discovery and the resulting evacuation.

This was Yahkowski's cue to explain to his troops that he had brought his home barbecue's fuel tank into the office so the company's concierge service could have it refilled.

Skinformants report that Palm staffers subsequently enjoyed a productive afternoon.
----

Wow. A real leader of men, eh?
