Cool

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting a cell phone. Mainly for work, to answer pages when I'm in transit. I was thinking if I hooked it up correctly, I could just get a phone and not need to buy a modem for my prism.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, near Stanford. The providers are Verizon (aka GTE), ATT (aka CellularOne), Cingular (aka Pacific Bell) and Sprint PCS.

Now...I like the Nokia 8290 which is GSM and has IR. It is available from Cingular.

ATT has the 8260 and various 6100, 5100 Nokias with trimode capabilities.

Verizon has Kyocera (sp?) and Nokia trimode phones.

The costs of service are similar. ATT has $75 rebate which would decrease the cost of the phone.

ANY input would be greatly appreciate!

You're supposed to be able to use a visor phone with a browser service to get e-mail and surf the net (in color?) I read about it in Handheld Computing, and it would be enough for me to take the plunge. But when I checked it out on the Handspring web site, they were kind of vague about the functionality beyond the standard GSM service. Does anyone have any input on the Visor Phone as a modem?

There's a LOT of information concerning using a mobile phone as a wireless modem in the wireless solutions forum. As a side note, I do not believe you can use any of the phones offered by AT&Ts as a wireless modem for your visor (at least I've never heard of anyone doing it). Several people have used Startacs (from Verizon/CDMA) and the Nokia 8290 (GSM) to connect to the internet with their visors.

Question Verizon Startac and Visor Prism

Do you have more info on using the Verizon service and a StarTac phone with your Visor. About a month ago when I spoke to Verizon, they were not aware of a conection cable. What hardware/software do you need to access the internet with a Prism and a cell phone?

In the "Wireless Solutions" forum they have many discussions about these things. Some companies are selling cables: http://www.cables4pdas.com, http://www.markspace.com and http://www.syncablesolutions.com/
