visorphone antenna?

Hi,

wondering if the visorphone antenna can be replaced or not. if so, is it hard to do or does it just screw in and out? also, how much would a replacement antenna cost and how difficult are they to find? (meaning, are these antennas generic and available at any cellular place or do i need a specific vp antenna?)

thanks,

mc

Thumbs down HS repair/replace plans

Are you looking at the same damaged VisorPhone for auction on Ebay that I am?

I contacted HS to ask about the antenna, replacements, etc..
Their official answer is:
1) the antenna is not generic (ie ya can't just pick up a replacement at Radio Shack)
2) They don't sell just the antenna
3) to replace it/repair it, you will have to send it in to HS service.. If you actually bought the product and it's under warranty, you should be cool.. If you're looking to fix a second-hand unit, it'S $99 for repair/replacement service..

Sucks, don'it?

yeah, that sucks.

however, i coulda swore that when the unit first debuted, there was some VC users who mentioned a $15 antenna that they substitituted for better reception.

anyone remember this?

I think I remember what you were talking about. But it was a thread on the wireless modem. People changed antenas and put a Rhino - Internal Antenna sticker in for better reception. I haven't heard of a visor phone replacement. And the Internal Antenna doesn't do anything for the Visorphone. It's hard to apply due to space, and didn't improve my signal. Save your $5.

The only thing I know of for changing an antenna would be to open it up and see if you can rig one up yourself. I haven't got that brave yet.

Good Luck!

Question VC thread search

I did an extensive search of VC's threads to see if I could find one dealing with replacement threads.. Came up with nothing but the sticker signal booster.

The pics of the VisorPhone aren't real clear.. Could someone with a functioning VP check this? Is the antenna removable? Most antennas I've seen are threaded/socket type, so they are removable/ replaceable.. if so it should be possible to compare them with OEM antennas for compatability (thread fit, size, etc.)..

Mine does not appear to be threaded.

VP ANT

Yes it just pulls right out.HS wants $85 if you break it. I had mine for 3wks when i broke the CHEAP housing by useing the VP case from HS. I got it caught getting out of car.
$85 for a $49 phone $%$##
I put the ant from my old NOKIA 5190 in the hole and got a signal. Some good glue and I'm back in working order. Not the best looking BUT sure beats an $85 REPAIR CHARGE.

The antenna is not threaded or easily removable. The upper half of the VP antenna is very hard rubber. It's glued to the bottom half which is plastic like the module housing.

I dropped my VP and it landed right on the ant. and broke the upper half off. It was hard to glue together without getting glue over the metal contacts inside so I just taped it back on with black electrical tape. Signal is fine.
