Unhappy Handcam and Mac

I tried to transfer handcam images into my iBook with SyncBuddy and
found that it is possible to transfer. However, Handcam image has its own format. I guess condit change that into jpg.

With SyncBuddy I transferred Handcam image file(suppose to be jpg),
but it doesnt work on iBook....

I'm at a loss, too.

What sort of file do you end up with on the Mac? Is it a .PDB?

It's a long(ish) shot, but it might be worth trying to open it with Graphic Converter, which can read hordes of different formats. It's what I use, for example, to open the PDB produced by Screenshot Hack, and save the images as TIFFs for printing in magazines.

It's shareware, so def worth giving it a whirl. And if it doesn't work, you could maybe contact the author; GC is regularly updated.

Nigel.

Post Handcam and Mac(2)

Thank you, nwhitfield.
I took a screenshot.

http://homepage.mac.com/duchamp/handcamscreen.gif

It's a DB so that I couldn't open it with GC4.0.9...

I transferred "XlinkVGADB" into Mac and it has ".pdb".

And you can't open the PDB in GC at all? Have you tried changing the type and creator? Save something from GC as a PDB file, and set the file you've taken from the Visor to the same.

The screenshot file, for example, comes across as a databse, which GC opens as a multi-page file, rather like it handles an animated GIF.

Of course, I suppose there's no reason why different graphical PDBs have to be in the same format ;(

Thanks for your help...never heard of SyncBuddy, but will look into it.

So it transfers via sync. Still no way to beam to PowerBook via IR port?

Also, would image open in Photoshop...or other similiar type program? I am in advertising business so lots of different graphics programs here.

Don

I wouldn't think it would be a problem... The Handcam installs a 70K app on your Visor when you first use it, and that controls the Xlink database files that are on your visor. It remains whether the Handcam is there or not, and the pics you've taken as well. If the Handcam isn't installed, the Picture taking controls of the software are disabled. The Hotsync uploads only all pictures/data in the Xlink database files on your visor, WHETHER or not the Handcam is actually in the machine at the time. My guess is that they'd end up in the same folder. Unless you rename the shots BEFORE uploading with identical names, everything should be okay. I'd probably leave the timestamp names until you get them into the computer so you don't over write each other accidentally.

Its actually relatively easy to use. I just worked up my new avatar from a series of Handcam shots while in a cradle for stability, downgraded to gifs... Neat?

Exclamation Thank Goodness for this Thread...

After reading one of Omnitron's many informative posts on the HandCam, I finally caved and bought one.

Until finding this very page, I was about to head back to Fry's and trade this in for an EyeModule2 (at least those work)... I think you know where I'm going with this, let me start by saying I'm running Windows XP Pro on my box, need I say more?

TotoAB, you're my Hero! ^^

For those of you requiring the RegKey for XP, simply copy and paste the following into a txt file and rename it Handcam.reg. Double Click it to install, followed by closing and restarting HotSync.

-Copy/Paste ALL Text Below-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\ApplicationHandCam]
"Creator"=dword:5869726b
"Directory"="handcam"
"File0"="handcam.db"
"information"="HandCam Conduit"
"Module"="Placeholder"
"Name"="HandCam"
"Conduit"="C:\\windows\\system32\\HandCamCond.dll"

Don't Copy This Text Now, if you're running another OS, simply change the Conduit Location. 2K users will need to change it to c:\\windows\\winnt\\system32\\handcamcond.dll as TotoAB states above.

Thanks Again Toto! I'm happy again

Didn't you just sell off your prism and all your toys for a laptop?

EDIT - Just saw you posted that originally in December! My Mistake, I was thinking this was a new thread.

Glad its appreciated

I'm glad my efforts have been appreciated. No sense in having others re-do some elements of the learning curve with this product if it isn't neccessary.

I've since moved to a Prism myself. The only real difference from using Handcam on a Platinum is that the yellowing of the low light images can be seen on the Prism screen itself. It really helps in NOT taking such images. Focusing is a little better on the Prism as you see a slightly more distinct image in certain areas.

By the way there is a Yahoo group (or was it a club...) on the Handcam now... membership is still small yet, and not very vocal, but we can change that

Q: Has anyone else set up a Handcam photo album of their own they've not mentioned here???? I'd LOVE to see what others have done with it... I'm a little jealous of some Eyemodule sites showing Several different collections of images...

Have you tried using VirtualPC to get the images? If you can sync via the serial cradle in VPC, I see no reason why the handcam conduit wouldn't work either. With the registry resources in this thread, you should be able to get VPC to do the job.

I don't think u can just IR the image to a mac, as the handcam checks if you have a viewer application present, and then sends both image and viewer if needed.

Unfortunately, with with the Handcam, you pay for what you get, a camera, nothing else. I reckon that extra 50 bux for an EM2 is what pays for all the "Support" you also get walking in the door as a new user... Eyebeam, EyeContact, EyeMail... Sheesh, doesn't ANYONE have a HANDCAM???

Sigh... But I digress, I don't like quicktime and fixed lenses anyway...

HandCam Group

Omnitron:

I joined the Yahoo group lastnight and noticed your presence there

I too am a little envious of the community that the EyeModule users have. I was toying with the idea of sending in my Handcam shots to some of those EM2 photo sites since both image dimensions are the same, and they both have the same "spiral" effect on the fringes of their long range shots. This is where it appears that only the centre of your picture is in focus, and the outter edges look as if you've rotated the camera in a circular motion creating a slight radial motion blur around your subject matter.

I have run into several problems as an XP Handcam user, and reckon I will post my findings as soon as I can get shots to illustrate how to correct the out-of-the-box issues. For instance, did you know this camera was a Xirlink as well? I have to use the Xirlink drivers for the webcam to work in XP, luckily, they're buried away on the cd in a handy location where not even the automatic installer can find them

Thanks again Omnitron, I'll post some shots this week. I'm a cheap camera enthusiast. When I say cheap, I don't necessarily mean in price, as both my casio watchcams cost way more than a couple of EM2s. What I mean however is the low level of quality they yeild because of many contributing factors, the largest being it's size and cmos. Keeping still is the name of the game with these things, and unfortunately, much like the watchcam, pressing the Handcam's dang shutter button is enough movement to throw your whole focus outta whack

I found out that staples is closing out all handspring items. I got two HandCams for 20 bucks each.

same here - saw it in Staples for $20 and told my mom it would be an awesome christmas present.

also picked up a Backup Module for $10 and a nice Chameleon pen-stylus for $7. They've got a thinmodem for $20 too, it looks awesome but I don't have a dial-up connection to use it with.

Thanks for the heads up guys --- mine BROKE a long time ago. For $20, I'll see if I can't hunt one up. Although I never saw them on the shelves locally in the Atlanta area...

If you're travelling anyplace check at Staples there... there's gotta be a Staples with 'em within a half-hour drive of Atlanta.

how'd you manage to break it?

I have an eerie feeling that my Neo will die before the springboards... i am notorious for cracking screens (like with my last two PDA's) but I have been lucky with my Neo.
