Handspring modem will not recognize batteries

My Handspring modem, which is about 4 months old, acts as if its batteries are dead, even with new batteries installed. I tried putting new batteries in my modem and my Neo, but I still get the low battery graphic when I put the modem in. Is there any way to fix this?
