Unhappy

I have been a Happy owner of a visor deluxe for 11 month. I spent a lot of money on accessories, including rhino case, 8 mg memory module, USB sync cable, deluxe styli,, 200-$300 dollar worth of software etc. I remember how badly I wanted a visor then, waiting for it to ship to me.

Now, Someone at work came along, and showed me his pocket PC (ipaq) with this beautiful screen, 1 GB CF card, MP3 player built in with hundreds of songs, Mpeg movie player, color photo album, beautiful reader with a lot of books, much better PIM and a lot more. I was salivating. I look at my visor and now it reminds me of my commadore pet back then. Now I want a compaq ipaq!!! Has anyone seen one with similar feelings? After saying this, I think I will be banned from this bulletin boards.

Unhappy

You do realize that I will get the blame for all of this?

Kinged:

While I think the iPAQ is great, don't let the MPEG movie player fool you. 5 minute videos on a handheld are pretty much useless! The only thing I have even used it for is the occasional music video. That's all. On the other hand, the MP3 music player is awesome!

My advice: Don't buy a Pocket PC unless you REALLY want one. They are very expensive. However the iPAQ is the hands down (pun intended) winner over the Prism. Especially if you intend to listen to music or use your PDA outdoors. The Prism requires an expensive MP3 module that costs up to $270. Whether you like the Palm OS or not, I don't believe ANY handheld is worth $720! And the iPAQ is really the only color handheld on the market that can be viewed outdoors in direct sunlight. It really is an incredibly innovative PDA.

1 Gig CF card? I'd hate to see how much that cost.

video he showed me including previews for movies and also home video of his kids.
He say 1 GB card are from IBM, they currently runs $430-480. Just imagine the number of MP3 songs you can put on there. I was actually quite impressed.

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

This is where the iPAQ (and other PocketPC's) lose me as a customer. They have some beautiful machines, and I have almost bought one several times. I really, really, really want their displays - the higher resolutions, the larger screen space, etc, but I just can't get into the WinCE PIM.

Except for Internet Explorer, I don't use the Windows suite of programs (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.) that much on my laptop, so I don't want them on my PDA.

Basically, I want the looks (screen) of an iPAQ or Casio EM-500, with the soul of PalmOS.

Talking I gonna switch

I am glad that someone brought this subject up.

After getting some links from Foo Fighter I have checked out some of the other boards featuring the IPAQ and have definitely decided to switch to the IPAQ.

But there are somethings that you should know before you switch.

According to the PDABUZZ Boards the IPAQ has a few issues that need to be addressed before you decide to buy one.

1) Lack of availability. Both the unit and the accessories are very hard to get.

2) Faults with the unit.

a) Sticking Stylus
b) Dust accumulating under the screens
c) Loose or flapping Reset Door
d) Popping sounds from the speakers

I am sure that once Compaq addresses these problems and starts to produce the unit to meet the demand then I recommend that you get an IPAQ. Of course this opinion is only based on the reactions that I have read on the boards.

Hope this helps

Mr. Fridge
