OK...like the Topic says:

1) Can you "upgrade" the OS? How do you even find out what OS you have? I have a new Prism.

2) Some people post about "hacks". What are they and what are they used for?

3) What is CF (used in connection with memory usually)?

Technically, the OS can be updated through RAM patches. However, this hasn't been implemented except for a few bugfixes.

From the launcher, either hit the menu button and select info or do /i on the graffiti area. Click on the "Version" button in the Info window, and you'll see your version at the top (probably PalmOS� __Software v.3.5.xH).

Basically, a hack is a little program that either talks directly to the hardware or intercepts software calls to let you do something with your Visor that the default OS options won't allow. For example, in PalmOS 3.5x, you can tap on the title bar of a program to bring up the menu options for that program. This was not available in PalmOS 3.1x (which the original Visors use). There's a hack available, though, which lets the Visor Deluxe users have this feature.

CompactFlash. It's a type of removable card (mostly used for memory expansion) which has some limited support on the Visors with an add-on springboard (only memory cards work currently). It's used commonly on digital cameras and PocketPC/WinCE devices.

Hacks aren't necessary, just luxuries, conveniences, and timesavers. Of course once you've gotten used to them they become "necessary" to you.

To use hacks you need a "hack manager", a piece of software that the hacks run under, so to speak. The original was HackMaster, others are available. I'm using X-Master now, it has some improvements over HackMaster and is freeware (HackMaster is shareware, though only about $5).

You can search this board for "hack", look at download sites like PalmGear under the Hack(master) category and see what all is available.

Hacks sometimes need to be activated in a certain order to avoid conflicts (for example if two hacks intercept the same button press). Start out simple and play around; have a clean backup on PC or module though. Watch your OS version compatibility too.

Another favorite hack is over-clocking (Afterburner for one, though not all overclocking utilities are "hacks").
