Talking Our Leader

Who says our president is just a "normal guy" who can only do normal things? He is truly extraordinary, and this picture proves it; showing that he can do what no other mortal can do.

That's unbelievable. I ride one regularly and can't imagine falling off it.

Wow, is he the most awesomest beta tester or what. Check out the segway, it is laying flat on the ground -- utterly defeated. I didn't even think that was possible.

See! I knew our president wasn't some average C student. His powers just weren't discovered yet! Actually, being serious for a second, this has to be terrible publicity for the Segway folks. I mean if GWB can't do it......

I'm trying to figure out what happened myself. The thing is supposed to be untippable. Either a catastrophic failure of both systems (it has redundant everything; control circuits, motor coils etc), or I don't know what. Maybe it is just a poor design and it does an endo when the key is removed or something.

I think nearly everyone on TV has wrecked on that thing. I remember the TV debut and the hostess crashed but they didn't show it until later.

I was talking with an engineer friend who designed some of the circuits on the ibot wheelchair, and he said they used to ride the segway prototypes a few years ago. The originals had a motorcycle type throttle and went like 35Mph, still with the same form factor. It was later that they added the weeble-wobble a.k.a. faceplant throttle.

Do you know the story of the guy who went to the hardware shop and wanted to buy a saw? He told the shop assistant that he had to cut down many trees, so the shop assistant sold him a nice big chainsaw.

Two days later the guy comes back all exhausted and angry, yelling at the shop assistant, asking what kind of crap he had sold. He had only managed to cut one tree and it took all day.

The shop assistant takes the chainsaw and starts the motor. The guy steps back, eyes wide open, saying: Wait a minute - what's that sound???

Maybe he wanted some privacy with the blonde in the miniskirt standing beside him in the first picture?

From what I understand, whenever they let you ride one of those things it comes with a person running along side you.

The one that's probably one of his daughters? Yeah, that's it. What if everyone had cameras following them around all day so the folks ridiculing him could see what _they_ really look like at their most vulnerable moments.

Maybe you should tell him that the new Treo will have a camera, and lots of other mobile phones too. After all, such devices should be made illegal, who knows what will come up if indeed everyone carries a camera around all the time. Oh yes, and mobile phones with voice recording and microphones too, given the ridiculing things they record at times. Clearly, we should not misunderestimate the influence such devices may have.

Clearly, I should not misunderestimate the influences people's prejudices will have over their understanding of a clear point.

You've got to wonder if there are instances of similar pictures taken which the gov't "convinces" the photographer not to devulge it. Similarly, there have definitely been places/times over the last 100 years when such pictures of the national leaders, if released would bring death to the photographer.

You are right, it must be my prejudices that prevent me from understanding :

"Natural gas is hemispheric. I like to call it hemispheric in nature because it is a product that we can find in our neighborhoods."
Austin, Texas, Dec. 20, 2000

"The California crunch really is the result of not enough power-generating plants and then not enough power to power the power of generating plants."
Interview with the New York Times, Jan. 14, 2001

"The legislature's job is to write law. It's the executive branch's job to interpret law."
Austin, Texas, Nov. 22, 2000

"My pro-life position is I believe there's life. It's not necessarily based in religion. I think there's a life there, therefore the notion of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness."
--Quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, Jan. 23, 2001

"I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."
Saginaw, Mich., Sept. 29, 2000

"A tax cut is really one of the anecdotes to coming out of an
economic illness."-- The Edge With Paula Zahn, Sept. 18, 2000

"They said this issue wouldn't resignate with the People. They've been proved wrong, it does resignate."

Yes, but more to my point, I've also got to wonder how many similarly stupid things each of us does every day that go ignored since we don't have photographers hovering over us waiting for our every foible.

Yep...because I wasn't talking about Bushie's intelligence (or the way the media likes to portray it) in any way.
