Memplug vs Flashplus

MemPlug vs Flashplus
Hi there! anyone knows the goods and bads of the memplug vs the flash plus? which is better?

as far as i know, Memplug plus PiDirect supports eyem2 databases being moved from CF to RAM and vice versa

does Flashplus allow this too?

And i'm using a Visor Solo now...would the OS being 3.1 make a difference? cos i think PiDirect only allows 3.5 to work

In any case if i get an OS 3.5 Visor..which woudl be better? MEmplug or FlashPlus?

tks!

one thing i know.

memplug cf is compatible with all major cf brands like lexar, simple, sandisk, viking but flashplus are not.

david kessler once said that the incompability is to due to signal timing.

frankly, these memplug people may have some unfair advantages since they were the designer of the dragonball processor (cpu of all palm devices sold so far)
http://www.memplug.com/AboutUs.htm

they may have done some special tricks

PiDirect + LIII + VFS support

Here is an interesting post on how a memplug user make use of PiDirect, VFS support and LIII:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/memplug/message/3544

Flashplus cannot do the PiDirect part and LIII (special memplug version) was tailored made for MemPlug.

Don't forget that you still have PiBackup, PiViewer, gMovie Player at your disposal.

The FlashPlus works with all of those except Lexar. I've used Simple and Viking; others swear by Sandisk.

The FlashPlus and Kopsis' VFS works fine with a 3.1 visor -- I've done all my testing on a deluxe with 7.5MB free memory. The only issue with a 2MB visor is if you're using something like Mapopolis and want to access a map larger than the available RAM on your visor. (I believe that's an issue with the MemPlug as well.)

One advantage to the FlashPlus (I'm sure MemPlug will add this at some point) is that you can put your own apps into the flash memory on the FlashPlus, so they're available no matter what CF card you have loaded.

Both options are good. I personally prefer Kopsis' software and support, but you'll find others who feel the opposite.

If you do go with the FlashPlus, I recommend Matchbook Products (http://www.matchbookdrive.com/) as a source. And you'll probably want to check out the FlashAdapter forum on Yahoo (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flashadapter-forum). (I believe MemPlug has a similar forum.)

I read in the VC review that the Kopsis software has a feature allowing you to adjust the speed which the card is accesed, is this true? This could also play a part in your decision, as the memplug I have seems slow.

file transfer speed is no longer an issue if you have pidirect.
you only have to move the file once and your visor can run it from the memory card.

PiDirect is a product specifically designed for the MemPlug. The FlashPlus equivalent is PowerRun and MSMount. Be careful to check that PiDirect will work on your solo -- some of their software only works with 3.5.

LauncherIII works great with the FlashPlus as well -- no special version is needed. The author has been working with Dave Kessler of Kopsis all along, but it's not needed much work. I've been using LIII since the early betas of the FlashPlus VFS. Of course, you can also use MegaLauncher, and Launch'em is working on VFS Support. I think there are others too.

True, these apps are included with the MemPlug. If those apps suit your needs, then that's a definite advantage. I use JackBack and SplashPhoto, so they are of no use to me, and therefore of no value to me.

1. msmount does not work very well with flashadapter's vfs support and msmount itself is not stable either.

2. powerrun is slow! it basically move the file down onto the internal memory and you need to have enough memory to run. what is the point?

3. powerrun requires palm os 3.5 as well

I currently have not received a single bug report regarding the use of MSMount with v2.0.0 of the FlashAdapter software. If you have encountered problems or know of someone who has, please get them reported so that they can be fixed.

The point is that it works with OS 3.1 (contrary to the misinformation you provided) and is of great value to those users who can't run PiDirect or MSMount (both require OS 3.5). It also does not require the data to be read-only. Changes made to the databases will be copied back to the flash card when the application exits. This is extremely valuable for some legacy applications.

No it does not. PowerRUN works fine with the FlashAdapter 2.0.0 software on a Visor Solo or Visor Deluxe.

Not to belittle anyone's accomplisments, but let's give credit where credit is due. According to PIT's website "they were part of the core team members in the development of Motorola's DragonBall Series Microprocessor". The Motorola CPU32 core (which is the actual "microprocessor" in the Dragonball) already existed. The Dragonball just packages it with periphereral components that make it more useful in an embedded systems environment.

In that context, I'm talking about applications that haven't been written or updated to include VFS support.

Its toooo tough

I have waited on the side lines for the last two months trying to figure out this same question. I subscribe to both Yahoo groups and I would have to say that Flash Plus has a slight edge in cust service BUT here is where Memplug has an advantage - They are avaible at your local Comp USA store so you can get them faster and if you have any problem return them local. It's a tough call and I wish Visor Central did a fair side by side comparrison.

After waiting two months, you can't wait a couple of days for Keith at Matchbook to send you a FlashPlus? 8^)

But seriously, Keith has great service (as I'm sure you know) and will stand behind anything he sells. That said, every Matchbook Drive (8 or so) and FlashPlus (2) I've gotten has worked flawlessly. The single MemPlug CF I bought at ChumpUSA was dead in the water. So maybe MemPlugs *need* to be easily returnable? 8^)

Both are good products, and a couple of days for shipping shouldn't affect one's decision as to which better suits your needs.

You've got a lot of matchbook drives, can't you just take the card out and put another one in or do you have to leave a certain card in a cartain matchbook or flashplus?

And there is the point

I am sure Uncle Roger was just trying to be cute but, that is the problem when trying to have a grown up disscusion, some people just want to defend their choice. I was going to let his remark slide but since I've gone this far. Every once once in a while Comp USA runs a special on Mem Plugs $20.00 mail in rebate was the last one. Buying at a store saves you also shipping and handling and makes returns easier (maybe thats why you have 8 matchboxs) anyway can we keep focus on the pro and cons of the units?
