Finally a color edge??

According to a very brief PIC article a color edge is on it's way from HS if the treo doesn't do very well..

16bit TFT screen
Slightly thicker than edge
16MB ram
OS 4.1

The OS4.1 bit makes me a bit skeptical, as does the speculation that the release will be contingent on Treo sales. This sounds like wishful thinking based on super-vague rumors that have been floating about since Palmsource (did VC go? Did anybody go to the Hawkins super-PUG meeting? hello?).

...but as long as we're dreaming, maybe it has OS4.1 because it needed it to support the SD slot.

If Handspring releases a 4.1 device at all I would be a little suprised. They'll skip it and go straight to 5.

A color Edge would have been good 6-12 mons ago, but it seems a little to close to OS5 to release a 4.x version now.

A color edge is not necessary because it already exists. The Sony T615 IS a color visor edge, and better. The weight, and dimensions are exactly the same, though it has a high-res screen, memory stick slot, and 16 MB RAM. If you're looking for a color visor edge, it's the Sony T615.

Not true if in fact it maintains the springboard slot

Question

It sounds too good to be true...

This part is very contradicting:
"According to the sources, Handspring will not launch this new model until they can evaluate the sales of the new Treo. If the Treo is not successful they will launch it, and if the Treo is successful, the future of the new model is not clear: its launch could be delayed or even suspended."

What has the color Edge (if there ever is going to be one) got to do with the Treo??? The Treo is a mobile communications device and the Edge (or the entire Visor line) is more of a PIM device!

And the Prism is one of Handspring's best selling model. It's fat, it's not as nice as the Clies, but when it first came out, it made heads turn... as the Prism and the IIIc were the only color devices running on Palm OS...

And all Visors in the past worked OK when on OS 3.5 and could run VFS stuff too. Why the need for Palm OS 4.x??

Also, didn't Handspring already said that the Edge was a mistake? Or didn't they?

Comments please.
Thanksss.

Thumbs up I will buy it.. But do not wait too long..

My Prism is on it's last leg. In fact now it buzzez when it is turned on. I think it is going to die any day now. I have had it since October/November of 2000. So I am ready for a new device. I have the (AirPrime SB3000) Sprint Digital Link. It is CDMA (No GSM carriers around here) So the Treo wouldn't do me any good. I also have a lot of money invested in 5 other springboards so a sony is out of the question. I hope the color edge is true. I will buy it without hesitation.

Isn't it interesting that this rumor comes around right as new lower price is announced for the edge? Then again seems like prices are dropping on almost all models.

PIC reference to Prism II from August 2001 http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID=2255

Don't ya just love rumors?

Ed Colligan had said that not releasing a color Edge was a mistake. [I remember seeing it here, but can't find the article now.]

I think Zip-Zilla was right about the edge being considered a mistake.

Whatever it was, I think HS did the right thing with the edge, YES, it may not be very easy to use springboards on a regular basis with, but it's still a neat little device and for those who don't use springboards as often as most of us do it's fine. I think HS needed to show that they could produce a small device and still keep their springboard (although not very practical)

What really amazed me about the edge was that a friend of mine remarked that he wanted one. he had never expressed any kind of interest in a PDA until then (even after all of my prodding)

Exactly.

I would have bought the Sony T-415 instead of the Edge had I known the price would drop on that device! For only $30 more you get built-in expansion (not that P.O.S. Springboard crap) and a jog wheel.

I agree that a Color Visor would bomb using OS 4.xxx -- they should start getting ready for OS 5, dump springboards for SD and get some SOUND into the device. Sony's pretty much trounced everyone else on price and features -- Handspring has to do MUCH, MUCH more to be successful against such an aggresive opponent.

Whatever..

You must own a Sony that is why you have to justify your purchase by slamming on the Handspring line.

I will agree that Sony has a very nice screen and much to offer. But as of now not many Memory Stick I/O device options availiable. I saw someware a camera and bluetooth. But not much else. The "P.O.S. Springboard crap" as it was referred to has many options, and with memplug you are not limited to just Memory Stick for memory expansion.

I have also noticed on my friends Sony that due to the high res screen some applications run slower.
Not really a big deal cause if I wanted a GameBoy I would go buy one. Just a observation.

I have 4 springboards and I like them a lot. I wish Handspring would come out with a new slim device with a Springboard slot so when I upgrade I can continue to use them. I know your gonna say that is why I should have bought a Sony they are comming out with new devices. Yeah right, And in six months Sony will design a new smaller memory stick and use it in all it's new devices and I will be in the same spot as now.

New color edge would get me by for another year. Then I will most likely get a (CDMA) Treo or other SmartPhone. I would need CDMA tho.. No GSM in these parts.

I'm not sure what the original poster meant, but I don't think he was slamming springboards (WHICH ROCK!)

The Springboard "backpack" for the edge is the "P.O.S. Springboard crap in my opinion. I don't know from personal experience, but it looks ugly, and would be hard to hold in a hand, especially with the MP3 player or visorphone.

On the other hand, I agree with you about the Hi-Res. I've played with a T415 and the Hi-Res is very nice, and I like how you can view small icons on the screen. However, the games actually look worse, because the games were built for 160x160, not the Hi-Res sony screen. The doubling makes the graphics look 'fuzzy' in my opinion. What sony needs is to do what Handera does, and let you view 160x160 games and programs in half the screen, so it looks the way it is supposed to.

I can live with the Sony Buttons, despite how much the up/down sucks. But what aggravates me the most is the lack of accessories, specifically stowaway. As a college student, the stowaway is a ESSENTIAL accessory, and I like MY NEW (though it is an OLD PDA) Visor Deluxe because it has great accessories, a stowaway, about 5 thumboard combinations, a thousand cases, and springboards up the kazoo. I don't care if noone is making new ones...I will wait and take the springboards from the gadget freaks needing the new M130 or T615, and use them until my Visor breaks. By then the Prism will be $199 and I will get one, because it is still a great PDA, and keep using springboards. And by then OS5/6 will be out, making EVERYONE'S technology, including Sony's, obsolete. Then another wait will begin for the new "must-have" pda line to get accessories.

I don't know about you, but yesterday's PDA and accessories is fine for me. I don't need tommorow's PDA and wait for the accessories (a vital part of a PDA)

I've owned both a Sony, and now a Visor Edge. The Sony really satisfied me A LOT. The Edge has been nothing but disappointing, though this may only be in my unlucky case . As for Sony vs Handspring, they're both good options, but I believe Sony is the better option, hands down. Just take look at specs and price. As for springboards, they're great! But they just didn't do as well as I and anyone thought. They'll soon be less and less developed, and eventually, they'll die away. Least for us last few visor users, we can get springboards really cheap.

Sony is here to stay, and whatever they develop, will be around in the next year, 2 years, and years to come. The Memory Stick Duo is smaller than an MMC card, and will be out soon. It will offer an adapter for the original Memory Stick slot, so no worries about not being able to use future technology . I'll have to find you a link to that sometime...

As for now, yes, Handspring has many more options, but soon enough, you'll be compelled to switch as Sony hammers more accessories and devices themselves out. Though since we're talking about the Edge...I'm thinking abot users who don't use springboards too much...they wanted the form factor more, so...

Nope, I wasn't. I own a few springboards myself . Basically what I was saying is that, a color Visor Edge just won't come, its HIGHLY unlikely. And if you want something that you classify as a "Color Visor Edge" then it's the T615. Of course, if you own many springboards and accessories, it's out of the question, unless you got the money to support it all. The Springboard Connector was a cool idea, but it just doesn't quite work. Its too much hassle and loses the entire factor of the slim PDA.

As for high-res, no doubt ALL PalmOS machines of the future will have it, so you best get used to it. It's no doubt better than the old technology, and will soon be adopted by developers and users alike. As for the fuzziness of games, haha, that's up to the user to decide, I think they look fine. And High-Res games are amazing...so, haha!

I'm all with you with the "yesterdays PDA" concept. I'm returning the Visor Edge and trading it for a Palm IIIc. Then I'm going to invest in an old WindowsCE Handheld PC, probably the IBM z50. Goes to show how old technology can work just as well as new. However, the fact is Sony is making great devices and you can't ignore that. If you want a Color Visor Edge, look towards Sony to deliver something that'll satisfy you. Technology is just too awesome, we can't deny that!

I don't doubt you that all future Palm's will be Hi-Res. But they will be Hi-Res based on new OS5-6 standards, not the current Sony Clie format. When it is adopted widespread, I will join the club. Hi-Res games might look amazing, but can you name widely known hi-res games on more than two hands? you can use a couple toes if you need to. But regular low-res games number in the thousands, and don't cost $30 (usually). The biggest Hi-Res drawback for me is that I do not need it. It would be nice, but what is wrong with the games/programs I use now? I use wordsmith with my stowaway - hi-res would be nice, but I am loving my current combination. My games look nice now, and I don't play action shoot-em-up games, so I don't need the hi-res.

Sony - Get some accessories! If there was a T-Series Stowaway, with a 100 different cases and a pilot-pentopia stylus, and more than 2% of the marketshare, I would seriously consider going for you.

When the IIIc and the Prism first came out, it was the same story, because all of the software (even the built-in software on the palm's) were black and white, and the only color they offered was on the home screen. Now, about two years later, almost every game and program by the smallest developers are including color support...I would buy a color device now, but not two years ago. It is the same story now, just with hi-res screens.

Frankly, I am looking towards OS5/6 with enthusiasm. I remember when the Visor Deluxe came out...noone could say anything bad about it, it was revolutionary, but built off of successful software and design concepts. I hope that we will have some similar devices like that soon. The M130 seems to be coming very close.

Red face Sony Cli

The Sony Cli handles the high-res vs. low-res problem elegantly. Simply go to preferences and select HiRes and select which applications don't work in HiRes mode. They still are "full" screen.
