Question CF, SM or SD?

Hi,

What would the best memory expansion for my Visor deLuxe, also considering buying a midrange digital camera in a few months from now? My goal is to buy a camera that uses the same memory cards as my Visor Adapter-to-be-...So what's the best investment:
FlashPlugin Adapter with CF cards or MemPlug Adapter with SmartMedia cards? Also, what exactly are these "new" SecureDigital cards? Are they compatible with SM, thus can be used in SM adapters?
Is there any difference in power usage between these different cards?
Thanks,
LK

You can try this out really cheap at:
http://www.users.qwest.net/~khudsonllb2/
They use the same software as Innopocket CF adapter. I am using the long adapter (cheapest model, $8 for the adapter and software plus shipping) with my Deluxe. I would say for Deluxe, this is the best choice(and also cheapest).

My two cents worth

I disagree. The best answer right now (at least untill Sept. 8th) is the the memplug for $22.00. A true plug and play. True that is the final cost after a twenty dollar rebate but you an get a free 8 mg cf card after rebate. Check your Sunday paper for the ad. Also check out the their yahoo group. for more info.

Where do you get a Memplug for $22? It's $30 after the rebate and before shipping and tax.
Do you have a coupon you can provide here? Also I cannot find the free 8 mg cf card. Could you provide a link for us? I don't have a CompUSA anywhere near me(nearest 120 miles away). Goto a B&M store is NOT an option for me.
Also please noted the original thread author lives in Netherlands. How could he get the rebate? I suppose the rebate is only valid in US.

I cannot find the rebate for the Lexar 8mb card on CompUSA.com. Do you have a link for it?

Hi all,

MemPlug SM - SmartMedia adaptor for Visor is compatible with all 3.3V SmartMedia card available in the market.

While MemPlug CF - CompactFlash adaptor for Visor will only compatible with some band of CompactFlash card due to the different in timing of springboard and CompactFlash Card standard.

AFAIK, Lexar CF card will have problem with all Visor CF adaptor available in the market.

For more info and compatible list of CF card, please visit our product webpage or our product forum.

Regards,
PiDeveloper

PiDeveloper;
great to have you on board. As a PLatinum user with no current memory cards, what is the difference between CF and SM to me?

The Memplug sounds great, but are there any truly flush adapters that will fit a slim bifold?

Which cards (not) supported?

Checked the site, could not find any information about (not) supported cards. Where should I look?

CF draws about 1000 times as much (1000!) power as SM, and all SM cards work on a memplug. The SM card only stick 1mm, and has no problems with my velcro case.

MemPlug is continuous improving both in software and hardware.
MemPlugSM is nearly flush now.

The difference between CF and SM is power and speed.

MemPlug SM is more battery friendly, but the write speed is a bit slow....

MemPlug CF is 3 times faster in write, but consume much more power (depends on which band of CF card, some card consume up to 1000 times power than SM)

SM is a bit cheaper, but with maximun capacity of 128MB, while CF card can support upto 256MB+ now...

Hate to dredge up a old thread, but it did answer some of my questions about the differences between CF and SM, but I have some more.

The first is about the power used. It was mentioned that some cards can draw 1000 times that of a SM card. Are there any lower powered CF cards that work with the adapters and still maintain their performance? Or is there a site(s) that list the electrical specs of CF and SM cards.

Secondly, I have seen in stores a adapter that allows one to directly write to a SM card. Could I use this to directly load the card without going through the Visor? Also is there something like this available for CF?

Lastly, is there any difference in the durability/stability of the cards? I mean if I don't use a card for X amount of time do I risk lossing the data on that card and if so which one tends to last longer without power?

Thanks for the help.

Don't know about the first question, but as for the second, yes. I saw an adapter in Wal-Mart the other day (Don't remember the brand, but it was in the camera section) that reads both SM and CF cards. The third question - as for the durability - go with a CF card, the SM is really thin, but if you are going to keep it in the case it comes in or the memplug, then it shouldn't be an issue.

Pi-Developer,

So when are you going to offer a SD Adapter?

You could also go with the MemPlug for MemoryStick. Then, if you like the Sony Digital Cameras, you would be compatible. In addition, if you ever wanted a CLIE, you would have that as well.

I know that a lot of people do not like MemoryStick because it is so proprietary, but I have been extremely pleased with my CLIE and Sony Digital Camera.

As for the other options, I have a SmartMedia MemPlug and it worked great. I highly recommend PortableInnovation. Great product with superb support. The SmartMedia cards are kind of slow and seem a little flimsy, but mine worked flawlessly and is still in great shape.

I also have the MemPlug SM adapter and think it's great.

However, with Palm supporting SD there may be many good apps developed that come on SD. It would be nice to have the option to use those apps as well.
