Hi folks-

I've been on vacation since 11/19, and my Visor has been with me constantly.

I decided at the beginning that I wasn't going to bring either cradle and be tempted by installing the desktop software on friends' and family's pc's. Therefore, the 11/18 avantgo downloads are getting a little stale, but what the hey. Unlike a Palm V, I don't need to hook up to the cradle to get my device recharged. Thomas Distributing's NiMH's are doing just fine, thanks.

Took Amtrack from Albuquerque to Syracuse. Great way to appreciate the size of this country. And great way to show off the BVD. Rather than take a stack of books and magazines, I loaded up the Visor w/ ebooks and didn't have to schlepp that weight. (Oh yeah, for the Memory Used Thread, 200k left to use on the device.)

Several people on the train asked me what the cute blue thingee was. Had fun telling them about it. Worked my way through Moby Dick, enjoyed Neil Stephenson's comments on GUIs vs. CLI's, read the South Park movie script and now see why we need to defend ourselves against those Canadians, and generally messed around with the device. "The Pouch" kept the BVD at hand and protected. I really like the way you can adjust the positioning of The Pouch to not gouge your anatomy when you sit.

I kept (and am keeping) a trip log. How late was the train getting out of Chicago? I know. Made all sorts of comments and references to pictures taken w/ the digicam. Quik Budget and Qmate kept my finances in order. Soft GPS told me just where I was, sorta. Datebook3+ tracked schedules and activities.

First visit back to Ithaca since moving 2.5 yrs ago was great, and everywhere I went, people wanted to know what was hiding in that black pouch. I was happy to show them. Brought up the ebook treatement of original Thanksgiving documentation to add historical background to the holiday. Contacted friends whose data resided in the Address book. Stayed current w/ my reading. Played some games during the slow periods.

Bus to Cleveland was made much easier w/ reading material easily available. Family here all thought the Visor was "qool". Especially Omniremote, which is a televidiot's dream come true. A waiter at the Cleveland Yacht Club came over during lunch and asked me "Hey, is that a HandSpring?" When I said "Yes, a Visor", he said "Cool. First one I've seen.". Everyone at the table was impressed.

Qmate expired on me, so I registered it and discovered you need a new version of the thing vs. pumping in a registration number, so I'm w/out account balances until I synch next on 12/7. I'll cope. Quik Budget is collecting the raw data, and w/ any luck, Qmate should be able to pick up where the demo version left off. (Note, if you're travelling w/ any "mission critical" software in demo mode, consider registering before you leave.)

Perhaps this belongs in the "Accessories" portion of the board, but if you see one of those cheapo "Miner's Headlamp" kind of flashlights and you do any reading of your Visor in bed, consider picking it up. Got a nice 6 buck middle of the forehead flashlight which is *perfect* for providing illumination while reading in bed, if you tilt the Visor slightly to deflect the glare.

I registered OmniRemote before leaving. I've been able to record the important infrared commands at every place I've stayed at, which astounds people and leaves them befuddled when you mute the annoying commercials that they are used to listenning to. Great program.

StarPilot ranks very high in the "oh, wow" rankings. Seems like everyone wants to know what stars are overhead, even here in the overcast East where you don't see them that often.

I want a Stowaway keyboard. Even though I've spent a while playing w/ TealScript and getting my Grafitti recognition going pretty well, my travel log would be richer if I could have typed rather than tapped.

I want a SixPack. Those NY Times articles are downright stale.

I'm glad Mom's online, so I can catch up w/ VisorCentral when it's up.

General advice: Get the Deluxe.

Gotta run. Bet the Visor will be just as much fun in the next stop, Chicago.

j.
