Question

If you purchase any modem for the handspring do you have to also buy
third party software to access or dial into the internet? If yes what
software do you use and how much is it. I am from Chicago, I use
Ameritech.net to access the internet with my computer. If I purchase a
modem, hook it up to the handspring, can I just dial into the net using
my existing internet account and software on my handsping?

I purchased the Handspring modem and love it!! I originally ordered the Thincom modem but it was out of stock and I will be leaving town tomorrow and couldn't wait. I purchased MultiMail Pro from Actual Software @ www.actualsoft.com for $59.95 which included the conduit for windows. In my opinion it's a great piece of software. Setting up the modem/network is a breeze!! It comes with a connection wizard that makes set-up very easy. The Handspring modem is plug & play with the only drawback being it's connection rate, 33.6. However, I don't use the modem for anything but sending/receiving email so this was not a big issue with me. I compose email with MultiMail, place it in the outbox, and the next time I connect I hit send and receive and off it goes. I'm never logged on for more than a couple of minutes.

I am browsing right now using the Handspring modem w/ Avantgo (which is freeware).

TopGun Postman is a freeware e-mail program that works w/ the built in mail program.

I have had my modem just over 24hrs. now, and I love it.

According to my own recollections and the VisorCentral PCExpo article http://www.visorcentral.com/article.php3?id=46&pv=3 the Innopak 2/M should be out in late August, cost $129, include a modem and memory expansion, and it will be single height. If waiting is an option you might want to consider this modem since it will take standard phone jack and cost the same as a Handspring modem.

I tried that and it didn't work. I ended up dialing into the system at work, then using AvantGo to browse. Since that worked for me, I haven't looked into another way yet, but one of my friends said he could dial into his existing Earthlink account. (He uses MultiMail to receive/send his e-mail from his Visor.)

How do you connect to the INTERNET?
Once connected, how do you browse?

I connect to the internet using my Earthlink account. I configured the dial-up in Pref->Network.

I use AvantGo for my browsing and MultiMail to access my Pop3 accounts and Newsgroups.

(I also dial-in into my work using a RAS dialup and perform network Hotsync's).

Narnia_77, you will not be able to retrieve your e-mail unless you have a third party e-mail program (MultiMail , Handmail , Topgun Postman , etc...). If you use web based email such as Yahoo mail, you will also not be able to retreive your mail using AvantGo. Yahoo requires Netscape or IE when connecting. Ask your friend

Thanks Bret-ski ,I will...
Right now, I'm only getting my e-mail when I sync from my laptop. I'm sure I'll end up using one of the programs you mentioned. Maybe one of the free/cheap ones...
