Question Neo vs. Platinum

Just trying to get this straight. What is the difference betweent he Neo and the Platinum? As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the Neo runs OS3.5.2H3 whereas the Platinum is running OS3.5.2H.

Is there any other differences that I'm missing?

What is the significance of the H3 in the Neo?

thanks...

Pretty much

The only other thing is the translucent case and cradle.

Oh, and the Platinum costs more!

The difference in the OS is mainly the addition of the "Fast Lookup" feature also found in the Edge.

Nope, both are $199.99. Perhaps you're mixing it up with the Pro?

I never thought about how they are basically the same!

Not basically. They're the same. I'm pretty sure Handspring has confirmed this. Other than cosmtetics and the "Fast Lookup" feature, they're internally identical. Incidentally, this is actually why I'm looking at getting a Neo to replace my Edge. The Platinum design should already be pretty stable for as long as it's been available. The Neo just added an extra feature that comes in handy.

The difference between your last post and mine is merely semantics. You're saying inside they are the same (agreed), and I'm saying overall, they're nearly the same.

Not exactly. What I'm saying is that there's not enough different in them to consider them different any more than the color of case makes devices different within the Neo line. It's almost like someone asking if there was a difference between the blue Neo and the red Neo, and someone answered 'they're basically the same'. That implies a bigger difference to me than is actually there. Ultimately, yes, it's semantics, but semantics has gotten a bad rap, IMO. Shades of meanings can be quite important, and I think people dismiss too many things as 'just semantics' when ultimately semantics is vital to communication. But, I digress...

1 a : resembling in every relevant respect b : conforming in every respect -- used with as
2 : being one without addition, change, or discontinuance : IDENTICAL
3 : corresponding so closely as to be indistinguishable
So it is semantics we're discussing. By definition 1a, you and I are arguing about the meaning (semantic) of "relevant". And I absolutely agree that precise meaning is conveyed by shades.

Now you asked for it...

Did you miss the part where I said that?

2 : GENERAL SEMANTICS
3 a : the meaning or relationship of meanings of a sign or set of signs; especially : connotative meaning b : the language used (as in advertising or political propaganda) to achieve a desired effect on an audience especially through the use of words with novel or dual meanings
IOW, semantics is not necessarily something that should be ignored. Words mean things.

Talking

Toby,
This has been fun! Thanks for being a good sport. It's great (even though totally offtopic) to discuss words. I got so wrapped up in the whole thing that I lost focus of your "Ultimately, yes, it's semantics...".

I'd go as far as to say that it's something that often ought not be ignored. And I know you agree

I'm buying a Neo today, and thanks for this post. I had wondered about the difference. *grin* I'm new to the Palm OS, having had a Windows CE machine for about 5 years. I'm physically disabled and there aren't ANY studies to see if a physically disabled person with a moderate problem with fine motor control can use a Palm OS device. *sigh* So, I'm "trying" out a Neo to see if I can use it. My previous PDA had a small keyboard (clamshell design) on it, and I could use it just fine. We'll see about the Graphitti option and the onscreen keyboard with the Neo, although, I DO plan to buy a Targus Stoaway keyboard in about a month.
