PDA's need mass storage!!

I recently upgraded my 2nd generation 5 GB iPod to the new, svelte, 3rd generation 15 GB iPod.

I love it. It is the best mp3 player around worth every penny to me. But it got me thinking. A lot of the PDA's today can play music. My Clie NX70v does an exceptional job of it as well as PPC devices can do so. The achillies is mass storage. People may say, if I have a PDA that can play music, why bother getting an MP3 player. But I found my experience improved when I didn't have to fussy with the device too much. I don't want to have to keep updating my music everyday so I won't hear the same music from the day before. If I could have gotten a MicroDrive for my PDA, I probably wouldn't have gotten an iPod or even bothered to upgrade it now to think of it. Aww heck The iPod is sweet though

The Mass storage issue also applies to video and documentation. I would love to store PDFs and more images on my PDA, but with paltry 64MB, 128MB, 256MB it doesn't cut the mustard. Why bother add photos to your address book if you can't even apply photos to all the listings because you don't have enough ram. The PDAs are advancing rapidly in capabilities but can't store the data they are meant to access.

I think going forward you are going to see more and more PIM features shoved into MP3 players. Kinda like the new iPod. It has solitare now, right?

Yes, solitaire is on it

I also have used the PIM functions, which are pretty good. I place events in the calander just like a Palm OS device, like all day events, alarms and even repeating events. Apple's iSync works just like Hotsync manager.

Ah, the Great Obfuriscation continues!

I think one of the problems facing the growth of PDAs is that they may already be obsolete. Their core functions are being absorbed by cell phones and MP3 players, etc.

I often get the feeling that the PDA itself is just a technological 'stepping stone' for something coming on the horizon.

Today one of my co-workers mentioned a 1Gb memory stick...
Didnt think that was technically possible..

There is suppose to be a 1 GB MS coming soon, but its the MemoryStick Pro. The original memory sticks can't go much higher that 128 MB may be 256.

I was under the impresion that the original MS could only go to 128Mb (probably due to memmory addressing limits..
