First let me just say this is a great site I have been reading for a long time and most of my Q's have been answered but now I have one of my own.

I have used a VD for over a year now and really like it. I now have a new job and would like to use it at work. The only problem is I dont want my personal info at work but I want the work info at home. I know I can create more than 1 user but how do I set it up at work. I have a WIN98/USB at home and will have WIN2000 at work. I already have a spare cradle.

Thanks in advance for all the help in solving my problem.

Brian

You can create more than one user, but you can not have more than one user per handheld. The ability to create several users is there so you can manage multiple handhelds from the Palm Desktop.

The most common usage of this is if you and your SO each had Visors. You could manage both profiles directly from the one Palm Desktop.

I don't think there is a way to differentiate your home stuff from the work stuff, other than to maybe use the private option.

Brian,
First you have to decide how you are going to differentiat between your work info. and home info. One way would be to mark all your home info private. If you do that the you can invoke the 'Pocket Mirror settings' option which brings up the 'Conduit manager'. Click on 'Settings' in the conduit manager, which will bring up the 'Change Syncronization Preferences' panel. Now select each one of the applications (outlook calancer, outlook contacs etc..) and under the 'Miscellaneous' tab you can check the box that will 'filter items marked private'.
This is one way to achieve what you want to do.

Good luck

I don't know how well they work but couldn't you use something like Palm is trying to do with Palm.net or other sites that allow you to sync to them? If anyone has used these, I'd be interested in your comments about the experience.

What kind of computer workstation are you using? Is it your own private computer, in your very own office? Or is it a shared workstation?

Shared Workstation:
At my place of gainful employment each user has to log on as themselves (to the computer). I have found that by being logged on as my self then installing the palm desktop to the C:drive only I can access my information. When the computer is logged in as a generic user nobody else can view my info.

Your own:
You may also try setting the password to the palm desktop. (I use this one at home to keep my kids from changing my to do list, {buy new bike, get a pony} or deleting appointments). If you are the only one using a handheld, this should work just fine. But rest assured after you have been around for a while everybody will be getting Visor-envy.

The simplest way is to keep your work data on an 8MB Flash Module.

A more complex method is to use two Backup Modules. One Module would be the "Home" module, and the other would be the "Work" module.

Assuming your Visor is currently set up for home use:

Mark one BU Module as "Home" and the other as "Work".
When you get to work do a backup to the "Home" module.
On your work desktop, set up all of the apps you want to use.
Remove the "Home" module and do a hard reset. This will delete all of the data in your Visor.
Do a hotsync with your work desktop. This will load your work apps to your Visor.
Do a backup to your "Work" BU module.

When you want to use your "Home" module, do a backup to your "Work" module then remove it. Insert your "Home" module and do a restore. This will wipe out the work data and replace it with the home data.

When you want to use your "Work" module, do a backup to your "Home" module then remove it. Insert your "Work" module and do a restore. This will wipe out the home data and replace it with the work data.

If you have apps that you want to use on both, you can store that data on an 8MB Flash Module.

It sounds more complex than it really is. The only complicated part is the initial setup.

At work I have a shared work station. Just got Win2000 at work but I will still be running win98 at home. WIll this cause any problems? The backup modules sould like a good idea but I was hoping for something a little less complex. ALso I will be using the microsoft product that lets you keep email and scheduals all in the same place (I cant remember what it is called now but I know it is the 2000 version).

Windows 2000 is the new name for Windows NT. All I know about NT is that it is not as easy to use as Windows 95/98.

Thanks all for your help. The following is what I ended up doing and for now it is working great.

Home: Win 98 Sec Ed

Palm desktop

Work: Win 2000

Outlook 2000

How they stay seperate:
I hid all records from home and that way they are still on the VD but they dont show at work. Very nice setup. Oh and there is already talk in the office of what is that, how much did it cost, where can i get one.

Lightbulb Soltuion to "Private" Outlook 2000 at work

All of the above is very nice, but, there IS a simple solution to this: DO NOT use Palm Desktop, but, Rather, Use Outlook 2000. Inside outlook, there is a feature that will password the WHOLE progam. Wont open ANY folders in outlook 200, unless YOU have the password. Check out this page for more info.

have fun!

Keep your info in one calendar !

I have heard so many people ask this question about managing a home calendar and and work calendar. I guess one of the very basic things that franklin, daytimer etc say is..... keep your calendar in one place. Effective calendaring and PIM is the integration of your lifes info one time. I use the "private" option for my personal calendar events so they are not visible on my work calendar.
