Unhappy Handspring Does it Again

Add the Treo 90 users to to the list of Handspring orphans. A mere 8 months after introducing their "Next generation" organizer, Handspring has announced it will completely abandon the organizer business by next quarter. Is there any way anyone could trust them as a future customer now?

Not Exactly Tethered

Hey, Handspring has only been spending the last twelve months telling us in no uncertain terms that they were exiting the organizer market. The Treo 90 has been a bastard stepchild since day one.

The thing still works, its not as though Donna Dubinsky dropped by your house and yanked the batteries out of the thing.

Refurb city

Having recently purchased from Handspring a Visor Neo refurb for $99, I am one happy user.

Here's why. The refurb Neo is as good as brand new. The price is right - $99 (instead of the $149 - the price at which they sold brand new ones).

Now, granted, $99 is more than pocket change, but ... at that price, I'm not very likely to bother with the cost of mail-in repair, etc. And, generally speaking, they, with exceptions for a lemon or two, last a good long while.

So... if the Treo 90's show up in the refurb area, that could be a good thing.

BTW, free shipping on the refurbs.

And, yes, with Handspring this could all change overnight

I think I quit trusting them when they renegged on the promise of compatibility updates for the Visor Deluxe, after I called them when they started shipping software that required OS 3.5 and asked when the update would be out. That was, what, some time in 2001...

But as people have already noted, they did say they were getting out of the organiser market back in December 2001, so if anyone got a Treo 90 and expected it to be anything but a lame duck they weren't paying attention. If your Treo 90 works for you, don't worry, be happy, it's not like there's anything special to the Treo 90 that you'd lose if you have to go with something else when you replace it.

I knew it would only be a matter of time.. I posted a message quite awhile ago (shortly after the launch of the Treo 90) saying as much.. I am only surprised in how quickly my vision became reality..

Actually, Handspring might be useful. It could provide fodder for studies of product lifespan for educational purposes
