Thumbs up New Support section at Handspring.com

Handspring has updated its support section with a better FAQ and quicker access to software updates. What do you think of the new design?

I just noticed that downloading the Palm Desktop is now cookied so you don't have to keep reentering your number. Yeah!

Shame on you, James, for still using Desktop 3.1. The Palm Desktop 4.1 works great with the Visor and has a much better interface. The 4.0 version needed some tweaking to get it to work with the Visor (required doing a custom install for the USB support) but their latest version works flawlessly. I've been using it for a couple months and think it is a vast improvement over the Handspring version.

4.1 is a great update but you cant use the Soundsgood module with it. I tried 4.0 but had too many install problems so I hope Palm releases 4.1 to Handspring soon.

Just to be clear, you mean version 4.0.1, right? Or has there been a 4.1 release? As of right now, all I see on Palm's site is 4.0.1.

Unfortunately, 4.0.1 seems to cause problems when syncing AvantGo. In particular, if you have an AvantGo channel that is prone to timing out or circular errors or anything of the sort (look in your AvantGo sync log on their website), the Visor will report that the connection to the desktop has been lost and your hotsync will be aborted. I finally gave up on 4.0.1 for this reason. 3.1 is ugly, but at least it syncs properly.

To the best of my knowledge, Handspring has not addressed this problem in any way, except to state on their (old) support site that they do not support Palm Desktop 4.0.1 and if you experience hotsync problems with it to revert to Handspring's version 3.1. However, if anyone's heard anything different, please share.

jsbernstein, you are correct. I meant to say version 4.01. And I have had the problem with Avantgo you mentioned. I recently got a Visor Platinum and associated the problem with Avantgo not working with Palm OS 3.5. I really like the Palm Desktop 4.01, so I might have to ditch Avantgo over the newer desktop. I guess the best solution would be for Handspring to adopt the newer desktop and offically support it. So to James, mea culpa. To the other Visorites or Handspringers, thanks for the response and info.

I have had the AvantGo problem as well. Thanks for finding the culprit.

Well since I review primarily Visor products I wouldn't want to have problems because I was using a different version of the Desktop. Besides, I'm more interested in having a Desktop for OS X.

Geez, why can't Handspring release 4.01 when any VC member could make it work in 5 minutes?!?

I don't know that it's that simple. Obviously there are issues to be resolved if users of Palm devices can sync just fine with 4.0.1 (as far as I know), but at least some Visor users run into hotsync difficulties, particularly with AvantGo.

Don't get me wrong, I think Visor owners are overdue for an "official" desktop update from Handspring, but I don't think it's as simple as just adding a couple of Handspring references to the documentation and putting it up for us to download.

When I called HS to ask about this last week, all the customer service woman would say is that she knows they're working on it. Of course, she then told me to just go download 4.0.1 from Palm's website. When I replied that HS's (old) support site said that they weren't supporting 4.0.1, she basically said "Oh yeah, you're right. Just stick with our version. I'm sure they're working on a new version for you." Not very convincing.

I have a Visor Platinum since January.
I just check and the Palm Desktop is 3.1.

Is this upgradable?
(I thought no)
Any thoughts/suggestions?

Timeout errors

The problem is with the latest version of hotsync manager (your sync log should so a 6410 error). Palm is feverishly (that is their own wording) working on a patch to resolve the issue since it affects Visor users and M50X users. It currently affects both my Palm and Handpspring devices and I am eager to get the problems resolved.

The last I heard it should ba available sometime in July.

You can upgrade it from Palm's website to 4.01, BUT visor owners get error's when they try to use it.

Arrow WhaT errors?

I am able to hotsync without any problems using Palm Desktop 4.01. To avoid the AvntGo issue, I use Palm Deskrop 4 (the original release) and install the Handspring USB drivers over it. Works like a charm.
