"Beaming" is amethod of transferring data between electronic devices.

In a Palm OS device, this means that you can transfer Address book entries, note pad entries, programs and pretty much anything on your Visor to another Palm OS device by lining up the IR (infrared, like a TV remote control) ports of the handhelds and tapping Beam.

It is very handy because if someone with a Palm OS handheld wants your address, you can beam your address from your Visor to theirs.

In addition to what CML mentioned, there are other uses for IR beaming:

1) There are programs which allow you to use Palm OS devices as a remote for your TV or other electronic device.
2) There are programs to allow you to use IR beaming to control certain LEGO Mindstorm products that you can use to make robots.
3) IR beaming can be used to hotsynch your handheld with computers that have an IR port (such as some laptops).
4) Printers exist with IR ports and programs exist that will allow you to print documents from your handheld via IR beaming to these printers.
5) Adapters exist to attach to printers lacking IR support to allow IR beaming to them for printing from IR devices.
6) Cell phones with IR ports can be used to connect your Palm OS device to the internet, with the appropriate software, via IR beaming.
