Regarding the shipping...

Hi,

I talked to someone from their customer service representative and she said that the Fedex database would not be updated until tomorrow. Any believers? If so, help me belive too

Exclamation Size, form factor and cases

I've have also ordered the Ominisky. I should receive mine tommorrow (others will have theirs today if they paid for next day service).

I made a mockup to get an idea of size. I using the new sport case from Handspring. It looks like the flap will not fold over the Visor with the Minstrel attached.

I may modify the case so the flap is removed. Otherwise I don't know of any cases that will accomodate the Minstrel S.

The sizes shown on Ominiskys website are misleading (http://www.omnisky.com/products/visor_tech_specs.jhtml).
They show 4.8 inches for the main height of the Visor PLUS Minstrel S modem. My Visor is 4.8 inches without the modem.

But other areas the Minstrel is 0.73" additional in height.

Cases alway appear to be the challenge problem with PDAs

Got It!

I Recieved my OmniSky this morning. Its nice ... but...
I'm not that impressed by the fit and finish.

The installation software is great, and easy to use. And I didnt have any major problems, except for one reset. But overall I'm impressed. The documentation is very clear and thourough.

Also, the package containst a special slip case, with an expasion / cut out for the module... Oh - and yes, its BIG!

Once I start using it, i'll post more.

Onward Wireless

-Mike

Got mine and here are my thoughts...

Hi all,

I received my OmniSky modem today. At first, I had some technical difficulties. I kept getting a Registration error #3. After working with a support rep, the problem was resolved by giving me a new ip address.

I also got a hard system crash which required me to restore from my backup module. (That module has saved my data so many times...) The application was AIM (AOL Instant Message) I use it in my workplace so I wanted to see if I could use it on my Handspring. It worked initially, but then it caused my device to lock up without any error messages. The modem looked like it locked up too. There were no lights blinking on it as well. I removed the modem from the device which caused the device to reset. I got stuck in a reset loop afterwards...

The OmniSky browser is stuck in Black and White for now. I spoke with a support rep about this too and he acknowledged that this is a known issue and is being worked on. He said to keep an eye on the website for an updated browser. This shouldn't be too much of an issue. I found that Palmscape works fine with the modem. I have not put it through the ringer yet since I am at work

I know it is large but it fits in the Sport Case that Handspring just started selling. When I say "fits", I mean just barely but it fits all the same I'll try and upload some pictures of the case and show everyone what I mean.

Overall, I am pleased with the device. I like the fact that I can access my email from anywhere. I used to work for Motorola and I had a 2-Way pager at one time and I kinda miss that. This does not give the same functionality as a 2-way pager but it is close enough for me I travel a bit and I like to be able to download maps when necessary. I'm looking forward to playing around with my new toy... I mean tool...

Regards,
Ron Querido

So No IM at all?

SO Aol Instant Messanger Did not work? Err that burns me...that was the main prog I was gonna use lol... If u don't mind, do you think u could try again? I know it could be a hassle...Its just I rly want to know which apps will work and which will not...Also, I am still a bit confused about omnisky...are you able to get to all websites or just optimized ones? I have thought that if u just use a differnt browser than Omniskys, it wouldn't matter, but still not positive. thanks

I'm using the Minstrel S (with Verizon as the ISP) and the AIM client without problem. Just wish the AIM PalmOS client had chatroom support....

Oh, this is with one of the @ctiveLink-modified Visor Deluxes.

I don't know why everybody else is ignoring you. I did ask you a couple of questions a few posts back.

AIM

Hi,

I've played around with AIM again and it seems to be working. I can't seem to make the problem repeat itself. I will keep using it though and I will keep everyone posted. I did find that it sometimes takes a bit of time for your buddy list to update at start up. I may have mistaken that as a lockup.

Modem Recieved

Ron Q - Regarding the cover - it doesn't fit. More later after I get software loaded and battery charged but since I'm already a PalmVx Omnisky user this will be a cake walk.

Moose Man is right about the cover

Hi Moose Man,

You are right about the cover. Even though the cover does stay on the device. I see what you mean about it not fitting flush on the Prism.

First Impressions

Got my modem delivered before 9:00 am on the first Fedex run. Initial impressions, thoughts.

- After openning the box, was surprised with the low quality look of the plastic, low quality logo printing on modem, Omnisky blue sticker not centered in logo spot.

- All of the pictures in the manual and on the box are of a Visor Dlx.

- The modem comes with a case with an extension in the upper part of the case that gives more room for the springboard. The case covers the Prism but the springboard sticks out of the top of the case.

- With module plugged in the Prism, it is a heavy unit as previous posts have commented.

- Got up and running easily. Crashed and had to soft reset, (only??) 4 tines today.

- Was surprised to see that the apps are all in B & W except a bit of blue in the Omnimail app. A previous post said that a new browser that supports color will be out later.

- The modem can only be charged by the AC adapter plugged in, (Does not charge via the Prism when in the springboard slot). Poor planning!

- Had the modem on most of the day and have about 1/4 charge left.

- I liked the red notification light of mail even when the Prism is off.

More to come.

Are you guys using Visor Deluxes or do you all have Prisms and Platinums because on the Omnisky site, it seems like you can only use the modem with the two new Visors.

If so, that sucks!

Angry Not Color?! Won't charge?!

I contacted Omnisky prior to ordering with two questions: 1) On a Prism, will the modem support color and 2) Will the modem charge through the Prism cradle. I was told an emphatic YES on both questions. I am very disapointed to hear that this is not the case. I receive my order tomorrow. I am going to be more critical as to whether I keep the service after 30 days.

sort of yes

omnisky didn't completely lie as both are true eventually (hey is election week, what'd you expect )

the browser will support color, and it will charge through the cradle (with the newer visor-phone compatible cradle)

all about timing i guess.
