Question

Will the Visor be able to use the sync software already available for the linux/unix users of the world?

My guess is just that, but I suspect the sync software will be compatible, or will be made to work after minor tweaking. I'd still be worried about the USB connection (serial is available as an option), which would keep it out of use on a Linux machine - for now.

Well, for all I know, the ppc version of linux (www.linuxppc.org) that's available for the iMac and the the newer G3 and G4 machines from apple include usb support!

So maybe usb support under linux isn't very far away anymore ...

I don't think much attention is paid to USB capabilities on linux right now. However, I do know that USB interaction is supported and will probably only require some tweaking on the part of some geek (like myself.)

Sadly, I have little experience with ppclinux so I really can't comment about it and USB. But if someone would like to send me a G4 I'd be more than happy to take a look!

Handspring has said that they do not have plans involving linux in the near future. That's understandable since the linux community is pretty self-sufficient. Handspring just needs to release some details and all will be good.

Actually, Linux is VERY serious about supporting USB at this time. I will be attending the Linux World Expo this February and Linux vs. USB is one of the hot seminars.

There is active work in the development series for USB. Actually, there is someone working on a driver specifically for the Visor. He recently got an email from Handspring so hopefully things will start moving. I sent him the initial patch to put it into his serial driver, and he apparently got hooked
http://milosch.net/visor for a start

And, if you don't want to wait for the USB driver (which will kick ass, BTW, thanks for all the hackers that make it possible!), the Visor will currently sync using regular linux sync software. I've used pilot link, jpilot, and gpilotd to do my visor syncing over a serial port. Just order the serial cradle with your device and you're set.

Also, if you want to code for the visor, the GCC compiler and PILA works nicely as well, or so I've heard.

Can I sync to my Linux machine across my LAN? I just (finally!) upgraded my home machine to Mandrake 6.5, and noticed several Pilot packages that got installed. I suppose it would be faster to just try rather than post the question, but I'm not home at the moment.
