Color Edge

I agree that the springboard adapter for the Edge is kind of klunky. But I would be willing to pay more than $450 for color edge with 16MB Ram and a better screen than the M505. An SD slot would add even more value to the deal!

I agree with the expansion. I wish the springboard adapter plugged into an SD/MMC/Compact Flash slot instead of the proprietary one. SD would've been an awesome choice, esp. if Palm's cards worked with it.

Yes, but that would require that either the SD control and data lines could carry ALL the information/power/etc that the springboard needs or that the SD requirements are a strict subset of the springboard requirements. Since this is probably not the case, the only way to support both a slim springboard adapter and SD is to have two seperate slots.

I have an M505 ordered and can't wait to get it. Matter of fact, I got so anxious that I now also have an Edge. Be interesting to see them side-by-side. I really hope that there isn't too much of a wait between the M500 and M505, or else my wife is really gonna be pissed off when I buy an M500 too.

LOL...if you are able to grab a m500 early at Staples or OfficeMax, you can probably play with it for a few days (and take pictures for us, of course!) then wrap it back up and sell it on ebay for a profit, assuming that they aren't just making up their warning of early shortages...

Two people at visorvillage said they spoke with Best Buy reps that subsequently informed them a color version of the Edge was due out in stores sometime this summer. If you think about it, it only makes sense that HS release such a product to compete with the m505. There is also a thread in this conference a few weeks back that deals with this subject.

Also, for those complaining about the add on backpack for the Edge, HS has already stated that a few developers are working on modules that will directly connect to the Edge. Also keep in mind that many of the soon to be released modules for the m505 such as (wireless) modems, PalmPix, and probably a mp3 player will be sleds virtually destroying the thin form factor that makes the m505 so appealing.

Finally, the springboard expansion slot functions very much like a pci slot on a desktop making it possible for all sorts of expansion. This is definitely not the case for the m505's SD slot giving that particular slot limited expansion capabilities.

I wouldn't be interested in expansion for the Edge connector because it's also used for the hard cover. I want expansion that I can leave in, not expansion I have to swap out every time I want to put my Visor (or Palm) in my pocket.

I like the direction that Palm is going with expansion where memory and backup uses a small slot that doesn't wreck the form factor, but devices that need to be larger (MP3, modems, GPS, camera) attach to the back. If you're interested in a camera, that would fix the eyemodule problem where you can't have expansion memory and the camera module installed at the same time. It also allows users like me to get the expansion they want (memory cards and backup modules) in an extremely small form factor. I also think the "sleds" look better with an m50x than the Edge does with its humpback Springboard connector.

I may not be a typical user, but I think the m50x series looks a lot better than the Edge for my needs. If I wanted GPS, MP3, camera expansion, I'd stick with a Visor Deluxe or Platinum. I think the Edge/Sprinboard thing is great for backwards compatibility, but it doesn't look that great for day to day use.

Also, the Edge doesn't have a silent vibrating alarm, which is one of the m50x features I like the most. (I currently use a Visor Deluxe with Innopak 2/V, and I'm really tired of having to enable the vibrating alarm again every time I reset or swap modules.)

I think they should've figured out a way to connect the cover to the bottom of the Edge (by the USB connector) instead of the top (at the Springboard adaptor connector) and then made it able to swing all the way back, when there is nothing in the connector

Come on everyone! Give me a break! I bought the Edge and I love it - it's the best PDA that I've ever owned. It's very solidly constructed and the stock lid is the best one on any PDA. It's fast and the screen is very clear. All this talk about the 500 and 505 makes me want to go back to Palm!

That SD slot does sound pretty cool. Those SD cards are truly tiny. The expansion slot dongle-thing that is required for the Edge isn't a great solution. Not being able to keep the lid on when using it is foolish. That's a big oversight by Handspring.

I decided to support the underdog by buying a Handspring and the Big Dog comes out with a killer PDA in the 500 series. D'oh!

Don't you have a dog or a small child you can trade or sell for the m500? That might keep your wife pacified for a while... until that rumored color edge shows up.
